Communication Breakdown?!?!

I am fixing to call Wendy's Hamburger resturant about what happened to me last Tuesday that went over my head.

I went up to order hamburgers for the family, this mexican guy couldn't understand me, I asked for paper and pen, he didn't get it...I had to physically sign finger to paper writing... to get the concept that I need a paper and pen.

This worker went under the counter and looked and behold!!!!!!!!

he gave me this manual book of Wendy's menu in BRAILLE?!?!?! U think i can drive and can not see to order?!

I told the worker that I want manager, he understood that part, the manager came by, I said i need paper and pen so I can make some orders. the manager did get me paper and pen, i wrote down,,, behold!!!!!

this manager is mexican, he can not read ENGLISH??! he kept asking me what is cheese? I said cheese, the orange square thing you put on hamburger, he went oh oh oh and said it in spanish. I went what the hell?! how can wendy hire people that does not read English and speak so little English and how can they communicate people?!

I have no idea how to reach wendy's, I have looked online, no avail....what happened to the society?!
 
Oh my...

I though most fast food resturant such as at wendy's mcdonald and burger king Other resturant ?? have a picture menu ???


dang! Hope someone give you on how to contact Wendy's resturant...

Sorry u make me laugh so hard .. i do feel yours ... also i have notice that more and more mexican start take over all over the placements of jobs ... few friends was trying to get a job in some places but they say don't have open as they start notice that more and more mexican getting hired it make them feel so piss off and most of us want to kick the mexican back to where they belong but i have nothing against the mexican but i do feels everybody's shoes .. one time i went to taco bell and same situations like that and i said to myself how earth would the manger hire non english speaker to take these fast food service ??? so when i come back to that place and check to see who is serves and forget it and go different fast food serves.

Also, some restaurants have "customer comment" postcards at the tables that you can fill out.

It does seem strange to hire counter workers who don't speak English. Bilingual is fine, but they should speak English for customers. I think it is also interesting that often Deaf people cannot get jobs working at fast food counters, why? Because they "don't speak English!" That doesn't seem fair. If a restaurant won't hire a Deaf worker "because you don't speak English", then they shouldn't hire a hearing worker "because you don't speak English." At least a Deaf worker could write an English note. What do the Spanish-only workers do to communicate with English-speaking customers?

OH GOSH! What an idiot manager hired a guy that dont talk that much of English. Poor you! :( It must be embarrassing to stay little longer to struggle thru this. Glad you got your food and leave out of there as you can. LOL that guy dont know what CHEESE is?! oh my god! *rme* what an idiot :sure: :whistle: :dizzy:
 
Our former governor (now our state Comptroller) made remarks about a bad experience in a fast food restaurant where he had difficult ordering because the clerk did not speak English. There was a hellstorm over his comments about him being a racist. The governor then backed him up, and he too caught a lot of flack.

That is for the whole English vs Spanish debate.

As for your experience in regards to being deaf and trying to communicate, was Wendy's in any violation of any laws regarding the ADA? Regardless whether the clerk spoke English or not, aren't they required to make some sort of accomidation to communicate with the deaf? As for ADA, I believe providing a pen and piece of paper is probably the simplest form of compliance one could have.

Actually those guys was playing with you ;) they pull this stunt all of the time to people that is annoying the hell out of them or dont want to deal with them as I have known from personal experience and being around latino friends. U know that there is "cheese" on the cashier machine, there is many food items that are in written english all over the place? For your benefit to shut them the hell up, pretend that you know spanish and thats "queso" and arm yourself with a spanish-english directory.

being an european-american in a mexican-american neighboorhood, dealing with the culture is a whole different ballgame and its going to be like this in 10 years, they will be the majority and the rest of us will be the minority.

I don't think arming her with a Spanish/English dictionary would help. She is deaf and is just trying to write down her order. Also, if what you say is true, I find it incredibly troubling that they considered her a 'problem' customer because she is deaf and asked for pen/paper to write it down. If that is the case, those people should be handed their walking papers.

When I was working as a cashier, if I had used such a bad attitude with a customer, I would have been chewed out, and then fired! "The customer is always right" was true no matter what.
 
i'm deaf also, and when I deal with those situtations, which occurs more often than what I would like to see, I write down the english, if they persist, then I just jot down the spainsh word for it if I know it. It has never failed on me once...

It is true, many workers are exposed to written english, they have to learn it so they can ring up the sales, how the hell cant both of 'em can't understand "cheese" when it is on one of the keys when you ring up the orders... and for a manager, you have to be proficent in english to be able to do reports and all of that crap?
