I am HOH with a real phone phobia :eek3: - I mean I use it, but try every other means I can to avoid it - even getting in the car to speak to a person.:stupid:

So I guess what I would like to know is how do you deal with the phone - mostly for work - special apparatus?, volume control? vp with clients?

Also, what kind of work do you do and what do you find are ideal jobs for us?

Until I found this board I really was unaware of the technology that was available. I do have a TTY and the flash/vibrating gadgets for the house, but the telephone technology WOW. Now can this be incorporated into a large biz with many phone lines?

Any input would be wonderful - thanks.

You're not alone, I absolutely hate using the phone with a passion and prefer to only VP with other deafies or use email or aim. I really hate relay. I avoid the phone as much as I can. And I am deaf with a cochlear implant.

same here,buddy :werd:

Telephone calls are always nightmare to me :pissed:
I am hoh,too and have severe/profound loss.. I only wear hearing aids bilaterally and try to use 'oral' communication :werd: If I cannot understand my work mates ( which often occurs) they repeat what they say.. some of my friends ( actually ,only two :( ) write down what they say on paper and this helps me a lot better than speech.. I can hear quite a lot of environmental sounds with help of hearing aids but speech still sucks often :(

I have bilateral cochlear implants and although I can hear pretty well over the phone, I prefer to use e-mail.

It has been 11 years since I could hear well enough to use the phone. After I lost my hearing, I used my TeleBraille or NexTalk.

Even now with my CIs, I prefer to use NexTalk for business calls to make sure I understand everything that is being communicated.

I use paper and pen when it comes to communicate with customers at work sometimes they don't understand why I'm deaf so I just show them to some1 else who will be happy to help them out for me :roll: about TTY calls I don't really use it but I use computer or pager to make ip relay calls but I know i hate using relay but I have to use it when I have to let my mom know where and what time I am home.. so blah :)

I admit to squinting at your pic to see if you were hairing or not LOL (you can tell me to go take a long walk.....) :)

Nextalk - do need to request your contacts to get in touch with you directly thru nextalk and not go through main receptionist?

Captel - as my family are hearing, can you switch to captel once phone is on for a normal phone call?

You've all been great. Thanks

Well, at first I was phobia when it comes to taking calls on VP. Now I am used to it! I take alot calls each day doing customer support for deafies. Some of you might ran into me. I learn how to handle some customers. Of course, ain't easy! But kinda fun because none of two calls are the same. And each day is so different. Some are good days some are whoa!!!!

I work in a human resources division in a large federal agency and I mostly communicate using Same Time Instant Messenger (almost everyone here at work is logged in because it automatically logs you in when you sign in to your e-mail). I also communicate via e-mail. I also have a D-link i2eye videophone DVC-2000 and it's pretty neat. I use it ALL the time when making job offers to people. I used FRS (Federal Relay Service) on the internet and I kept on getting frustrated because people were hanging up on me. They either thought I was a telemarketer or didn't know what a relay operator was so I said that's it! I'm going to use VP from now on. Since I got it (almost 1 year and half) NO ONE has hung up on me. I do have a regular work phone next to me but I never use it except for teleconference calls at my desk (with an interpreter) or if someone calls my phone, I can see the phone number and then I'll call back ASAP using my VP.

Exact the reason why VP is better than TTY! Most hearing people don't like TTY relay calls. That is NOT because they think it is telemarketer, they also think it may be scam, and also most importantly they don't have any patience for slow poke conversation, It would take 45 minutes on TTY conversation for same amount of information when using normal voice to voice calls in just 10 minutes!!! No one wants deal with this, also many of customer reps have their work load quote to meet, they have to handle like 6 calls an hour, how could they meet this quota if they use TTY relay calls? That is one factor why they would hang up so that they can take other calls.

Well that means I have to use ASL to speed up the conversation because of my hearing impairement...

Yes that's true but the main reason I believe is because hearing people don't like the idea to say "Go Ahead" back and forth and have to wait for GA before can say something more. With VP, no need to say GA at all. Also even more advantage if VP with VCO better.

I hate using the TTY for relay purposes and I prefer email and IMs. If I were to use VP (I don't own one but will do so one day), I'd use it only with people I know very well as I'm very bad at recognizing people.

I hate using the relay so much I let my dad make the appointment for me for my CI surgery. As a rule, I prefer to do things myself but let's let someone take care of phone calls for me. :P

Ok - homework time :type:

So vp with vco - is relay officer incognito as in captel?

and call comes on regular phone and then you call back thru vp. Does this work for a hoh person who does not sign?

Customer service and human resources - awesome - hats off to you guys!

Also grrrr, I write these long winded posts and then when I go to submit find I have been logged off - so you are seeing the short version :lol: WHY?

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is VP and how does it work? Is VP a service that allows D/deaf and hard of hearing individuals to communicate in ASL through an interpreter on the computer?

Either the computer or can be hooked up to a TV. It depends on which VRS (Video Relay Service) provider you're on. VP stands for Video Phone. Yes you use sign language to communicate with the interpreter for relaying between the hearie caller and the deaf communicating with sign language. :)

I don't see any reason for being ignorant and I one-hundred-percent don't think you're ignorant.

I am hairing and I hate using the phone for anything, TTY, normal phone or anything.

Interesting. You would be the first hearing person I have heard of saying that. I can understand some that are not partial to it but use it when necessary (as in no big deal).

I used to definitely avoid using the phone in my HA days as it was problematical in how well I did. In other words, it depended on whom I talked with such as my wife and some other people. Since I have gotten my CI, it has been night and day and I love using the phone now. No problem and no sweat...can't get better than that. The only problem I have is when it gets noisy around me and I have to shut my door in my office or find a quieter place. I prefer the straight feed and not the T-Coil (heck I have never used it).

Okay ... I hope I can make it very clear for you to understand what I'm talking about. I'm hearing impaired who can speak fairly. I will try my best with explaination from my experience with Sorenson Video Phone I have here. With SVP device I used on TV instead computer screen which it's very easier and comfortable. Okay ...

VP = Video Phone
VRS = Video Relay Service
VCO = Voice Carry Over

examples:
VP ... I can call direct to anyone who also have VP. No need to have a relay interpreter because the person I'm calling to and I can do sign languages ourselves to communicate. This is really cool.

VRS ... For those who don't have VP and is hearing person. I or others will have to call thru Relay Service to have its interpreter to interpret for our conversation. The interpreter will do sign for me to watch (listen) what others have to say (voice) and the interpreter will do voice interpret to others what I have to say in sign languages. No need to say GA.

VRS with VCO ... As I mentioned I can speak good. Others and I still have to call thru Relay Service and let them know it will be VCO and need to have it set up by interpreter. When ready I can pick up my phone and use my own voice to speak to someone I'm calling to .. now the interpreter might NOT hear my voice but others whom I'm calling to will hear my voice and listen what I have to say. When other take turn to talk, the interpreter will sign to me in sign language. That's about all interpreter did is to sign to me what others said to me. This is really cool too.

Does that make sense to you what I'm talking about. If not, please let me know and I will try to explain or perhaps someone else will explain better then I can.
