College student charged in slaying possibly linked to Craigslist
College student charged in slaying possibly linked to Craigslist - CNN.com

A 22-year-old college student in Boston, Massachusetts, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a woman who may have been contacted through a Craigslist ad, police said.

Philip Markoff, a pre-med student at Boston University with no criminal record, also was charged with the armed robbery and kidnapping of another victim, Police Commissioner Ed Davis announced Monday evening. Markoff, who was under police surveillance, was arrested earlier in the afternoon after a traffic stop south of the city, police said.

Markoff is suspected in the death of New York City resident Julissa Brisman, 26, who was found unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds at Boston's Copley Marriott Hotel on April 14. She was transferred to Boston Medical Center, where she died from her injuries shortly afterward.

Police said that Brisman, a model, offered massages via Craigslist, a popular online classified ads service.

The confrontation between Brisman and her killer seems to have begun as an attempted robbery, police said. "It appears that there was a struggle between the victim and the suspect in the threshold of the hotel room immediately prior to the shooting," the Boston Police Department said in a statement posted on its Web site.

Surveillance videos from the hotel where Brisman was murdered showed a tall, clean-cut young blonde man in a black windbreaker leaving the property, said the Boston Police Department, which had asked for the public's help in identifying the man.

Police did not release a photo of Markoff on Monday.

Four days before Brisman's killing, Markoff allegedly robbed a 29-year-old woman at gunpoint at a Westin Hotel in Boston, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said.

A police spokesman would not disclose the details of her Craigslist ad but said she and Brisman were "involved in similar professions."

"This is a compelling case with a myriad of evidence -- with computer evidence being a part of it," Conley said, adding that additional search warrants would be executed this week.

Markoff's arraignment was set for Tuesday morning at the Boston Municipal Court. It was not immediately clear if he had retained defense counsel.

Davis and Conley warned there may be other victims that come forward in the case.

"We would like to make one final pitch to those out there who may have been a victim of robbery at the hands of Philip Markoff, especially those who may have used Craigslist in the manner in which the victim used Craigslist," he said.

Authorities received more than 150 leads in the case, which Davis credited to the popularity of the Web site.

"The public came forth, they were fascinated by this crime," he said, adding, "I wish we had this level of cooperation in every homicide that occurred."

Davis said Boston investigators were working with police in Warwick, Rhode Island, in what could be a related case.

On April 16 at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, Rhode Island, a man tied up and demanded money from a 26-year-old dancer who had posted a Craigslist advertisement, according to Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney.

The robbery was interrupted when the woman's husband entered the room. After pointing his gun at the husband, the suspect fled, according to McCartney.

He said no conclusions could be made, but allowed that the incident "may be related to similar crimes occurring in the Boston area."

Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster said the company was "horrified and deeply saddened that our community services have been associated in any way whatsoever with a crime of violence."

He promised that Craigslist would evaluate the incident to see if additional measures could be introduced to further protect users.

warns never let using craiglists on websites!!

Something just like that happened here in MN last year. Some young punk advertised on craigslist for a nanny and this woman responded to the ad. He killed her - the craigslist ad was just a ruse - he didn't even have children. Just last week he was found guilty with life in prison with no parole. I can't feel bad for him, but sad for the woman he killed.

Definitely scary!

I found an ad on CL for a free treadmill last year. Contacted the person immediately before someone else gets it. Turned out that they still had it and told me to come right away to get it as they already had 3 other inquiries. So I just dropped whatever I was doing and went over there. It was in an townhouse and a man answered the door. I told him I was there for the treadmill and he told me to come in to take a look. Right there, I froze cuz I had heard of stories like these. Then his wife with a baby came up to the door so I felt a little better but not much. Still was hestistant..the guy seemed to know what I was thinking. He said " ohhhh we aren't crazies who put (untillegible) ad to lure people and hurt them." I was like ok..got the treadmill. No problems but I was VERY nervous the whole time. Next time, I will bring my hubby but I was not wanting to lose a free $3,000 treadmill! Laster I realized it poor judgement on my part so I never did it again.

Craigslist Nanny Found Dead in Car Trunk

Sunday, October 28, 2007

SAVAGE, Minn. — Police in Minnesota say an online ad may have cost a young woman her life.

They say Katherine Olson was last seen by friends when she went to meet someone about a nanny job posted on Craigslist.org, the Internet bulletin board.

A day later, her body was found in her car at a Minnesota nature preserve. Police declined to say how the 24-year-old was killed.

Authorities say a 19-year-old man who they believe placed the ad is being held pending charges. Authorities did not release his name but said charges could be filed as soon as today.

Olson graduated from St. Olaf College last year. Her family said she had taken nanny jobs at least twice before after answering online ads

Med student held without bail in possible Craigslist killing
Med student held without bail in possible Craigslist killing - CNN.com

A medical student was arraigned Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court in connection with the death of a woman who police say may have been contacted through a Craigslist online ad.

Wearing a blue striped shirt and a somber expression, his wrists in handcuffs, suspect Philip Markoff, 22, did not speak during the court appearance. A procedural not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf, prosecutors said.

He will be held without bail on a murder charge, although separate bonds were set on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping stemming from an incident involving a second woman.

During the hearing, prosecutors said that in executing a search warrant at Markoff's home, authorities found a semiautomatic firearm and ammunition, along with ties similar to those used to bind the second woman.

A woman identifying herself as Markoff's fiancée said in an e-mail sent to ABC News he "is the wrong man" and "was set up."

"Unfortunately, you were given wrong information as was the public," Megan McAllister wrote in the e-mail. "All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly!"

She accused Boston police of "trying to make big bucks by selling this false story to the TV stations. What else is new??"

Markoff, who was under police surveillance, was arrested Monday afternoon after a traffic stop south of Boston, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.

Markoff is a second-year student at Boston University's medical school, according to the school. The school suspended him Monday when it learned of the charges, a spokeswoman said.

Markoff is suspected in the death of New Yorker Julissa Brisman, 26, who was found unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds at Boston's Copley Marriott Hotel on April 14. She was transferred to Boston Medical Center, where she died from her injuries shortly afterward.

Police said that Brisman, a model, offered massages via Craigslist, a popular online classified ads service.

The confrontation between Brisman and her killer seems to have begun as an attempted robbery, police said. "It appears that there was a struggle between the victim and the suspect in the threshold of the hotel room immediately prior to the shooting," the Boston Police Department said in a statement on its Web site.

Surveillance videos from the hotel where Brisman was slain showed a tall, clean-cut, young blond man in a black windbreaker leaving the property, said the Boston police, which asked for the public's help in identifying the man.

Four days before Brisman's killing, Markoff allegedly robbed a 29-year-old woman at gunpoint at a Westin Hotel in Boston, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said.

A police spokesman would not disclose the details of this woman's Craigslist ad but said she and Brisman were "involved in similar professions."

"This is a compelling case with a myriad of evidence -- with computer evidence being a part of it," Conley said, adding that additional search warrants would be executed this week.

The Boston killing has prompted Craigslist to look for ways to make the site safer for users, its chief executive officer said Tuesday. "Anytime something like this happens, it's a wake-up call," said Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster.

Buckmaster said the company prohibits illegal activity and regularly works with law enforcement. He urged people who meet strangers to use the same common sense offline that they would online -- use a public place.

Davis and Conley warned other victims may come forward in the case.

"We would like to make one final pitch to those out there who may have been a victim of robbery at the hands of Philip Markoff, especially those who may have used Craigslist in the matter in which the victim used Craigslist," Conley said.

Authorities received more than 150 leads in the case, which Davis credited to the popularity of the Web site.

"The public came forth; they were fascinated by this crime," he said, adding, "I wish we had this level of cooperation in every homicide that occurred."

Davis said Boston investigators were working with Warwick, Rhode Island, police in what could be a related case.

He said no conclusions could be made yet but allowed that the incident "may be related to similar crimes occurring in the Boston area."

Neighbors told ABC's "Good Morning America" the news of Markoff's arrest surprised them because their neighbor was friendly and outgoing.

In the e-mail to ABC, McAllister wrote, "Philip is an intelligent man who is just trying to live his life, so if you could leave us alone we would greatly appreciate it. We expect to marry in August and share a wonderful, meaningful life together."

Preppy Medical Student Charged as 'Craigslist Killer'
Preppy Medical Student Charged as 'Craigslist Killer' - Crime & Courts : People.com

An intensive police investigation along the Eastern Seaboard came to a dramatic conclusion at 4 p.m. Monday, when Boston police arrested a 22-year-old, engaged-to-be-married, second-year Boston University medical student – accused of murdering a New York woman at a luxury Boston hotel last week and of earlier attacking another woman, both of whom had advertised personal services on Craigslist.

Philip Markoff, of Quincy, Mass., has been charged with the April 14 fatal shooting of masseuse Julissa Brisman, 26, at Boston's Marriott Copley Hotel. He also is expected to be charged in the April 10 armed robbery and kidnapping of a woman who was tied up at the Westin Copley. She identified her attacker to police as a clean-cut, 6-ft.-tall blond man who bound her with plastic cord.

"We are very, very happy to have this man off the streets in a timely way," Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said at a Monday night press conference. Markoff, who has no criminal history, appeared Tuesday for a brief hearing in Boston Municipal Court. He said nothing.

Davis credited the arrest to 24-hour surveillance that relied on a wide range of forensic evidence, including fingerprints, the Boston Globe reports. Photos taken by surveillance cameras of a man meeting Markoff's description and leaving the hotels after the two incidents were also widely shown on national TV.

Suspended from School
The preppy-looking Markoff – whose arrest and possible secret sexual life has shocked his fellow students as well as his stepfather – had been stopped by police while driving on Interstate 95 after what crime experts are calling an old-fashioned police manhunt.

A spokeswoman for the Boston University School of Medicine told the Globe that Markoff has been suspended because of the charges against him, while a former classmate said, "He seemed like a nice guy, and he was a helpful, smart kid."

Calling the suspect a "predator," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley asked for other possible Craigslist ad victims of Markoff to step forward. "We want to help you," Conley said at press news conference.

A wedding Web site lists Markoff as engaged to Megan McAllister, whom he met at the State University of New York at Albany. McAllister could not be reached for comment.

A man who identified himself to the newspaper as Markoff's former stepfather, expressed his shock. "He's a great kid. I can't believe what's going on," said the man who identified himself only as Gary (and is divorced from Markoff's mother). "He's a very bright, intelligent, articulate guy. I just keep thinking there must be some mistake."

I totally understand your fear. It isn't poor judgement that you wanted the treadmill. Just next time bring someone with you, that'll make you feel better. I got a free computer last year off CL (it turned out to be JUNK and trashed it after a week LOL) but I brought a friend with me. Makes me feel much better.

'Craigslist killer' Michael John Anderson gets life in murder of Katherine Olson

'Craigslist killer' Michael John Anderson gets life in murder of Katherine Olson

Friday, April 3rd 2009, 8:36 AM

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — A man convicted of murdering a woman he had lured to his home with an online baby-sitting ad was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole Wednesday.

The sentence was mandatory for 20-year-old Michael John Anderson, who was convicted Tuesday of first-degree premeditated murder and other charges in the October 2007 shooting death of Katherine Ann Olson, 24.

"Mr. Anderson is not just a murderer — he's a thief of the future of our family's joy," said the Rev. Rolf Olson. "He needs to be prevented from inflicting evil on anybody else's life ever again."

The Lutheran pastor said he believes God will help him to forgive Anderson, but "in this situation, I don't sense that there is any hurry."

Prosecutors said during the weeklong trial that Anderson, of Savage, ran a phony ad on the Craigslist classified-ad Web site in order to lure a woman to his home so he might experience what it felt like to kill.

The defense argued that the shooting was accidental. Anderson's lead attorney, Alan Margoles, said he plans an appeal because he wasn't allowed to present evidence that Anderson has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

Anderson declined to comment during or after the sentencing. Margoles conveyed on Anderson's behalf his "deepest regrets for his actions."

"Why did you do this? You are the only one who knows and I won't pretend to understand it," Scott County District Judge Mary Theisen said from the bench. She added that Anderson was a "coward" when he shot Olson — who Theisen believed was "running for her life."

"You have shown no remorse and I have no empathy for you," Theisen said before handing down the life sentence. She also ordered Anderson to pay restitution of $6,500 from his prison wages to reimburse Olson's family for her funeral expenses.

Sarah Richter, Olson's older sister, said her sleep is interrupted nightly by horrible images from the murder.

"I'm haunted by Anderson's face, by Katherine's screams, the gun, her body in the trunk and now, the real bloody images of my sister," she said. "When will I sleep again?"

Police Link Victims, Craigslist Suspect
Police Link Victims, Craigslist Suspect - CBS News

A Boston University medical student accused of robbing women who advertised erotic services on Craigslist, killing one of them, had items belonging to both victims in his apartment, a law enforcement source said Wednesday.

Philip Markoff, dubbed the "Craigslist killer," is charged with killing a masseuse at the Marriott Copley Place hotel April 14. He is also charged in the robbery of another woman who he allegedly met at another Boston hotel four days earlier.

A law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said police found items belonging to both women in Markoff's apartment in Quincy, south of Boston. The source wasn't authorized to speak about evidence in the investigation.

The source would not confirm a report by ABC News that the items seized by police included the victims' underwear. ABC News said two unidentified law enforcement sources said Markoff appeared to be collecting underwear as "souvenirs" from his alleged victims.

Markoff, 23, is accused in the death of Julissa Brisman, 26, of New York City, a masseuse who was found dead in the doorway of her hotel room after being bashed in the head and shot three times. He's also suspected of robbing and tying up another, and police have said there could be more victims.

Investigators are looking into gambling as the possible motivation. The law enforcement source says Markoff was a "frequent visitor" to Foxwoods casino in Connecticut.

When Markoff was arrested Monday, he and his fiancée were headed to Foxwoods, and he was carrying a suitcase with more than $1,000 in cash, a police source told the New York Daily News.

Markoff had recently started frequenting the poker tables at the casino, playing as much as $1,000 a hand, the source said, who added that Markoff won $5,300 last week.

Boston police refused to comment on reports citing unidentified law enforcement sources that Markoff was a problem gambler. But the casino said it was helping investigators.

"We do not release information publicly concerning individual patrons; however, we are aware of this situation and are cooperating with the appropriate law enforcement authorities," the casino and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation said in a statement.

Boston District Attorney Daniel Conley said the primary motive for the crimes is robbery, though he told CBS' The Early Show his department would pursue the gambling angle.

"He was en route to Foxwoods to spend the night there," Conley told The Boston Globe. "The question on the nature and the extent of his gambling - whether he is a casual, periodic gambler or a regular gambler - I don't know the answer to that question. . . . As we explore various motives for the robberies, gambling is certainly a motive that we will look at."

Brisman, 26, was an aspiring model and actress who had advertised erotic massage on craigslist. Authorities said she and Markoff communicated through e-mail and cell phone to set up a meeting.

Investigators traced an e-mail to Markoff, who created a new address the day before Brisman's body was discovered at the Marriott Copley Hotel.

Authorities say he was the man seen on surveillance video near where Brisman was found and where a woman was robbed in Rhode Island.

Markoff's grandfather, Jerome Markoff, a lawyer from Arnold, Md., said he was shocked.

"This is not my grandson. I know my grandson," he told The Boston Globe. "I hate to see a rush to judgment ... He's a wonderful boy, just absolutely wonderful, and couldn't be better. I'm proud of him and proud of his abilities as a medical student. He always wanted to be a doctor."

Markoff's grandfather did not immediately respond to a call from The Associated Press. Police said his grandson has no prior criminal record.

Markoff is also suspected in the attempted robbery Thursday in Warwick, R.I., of a stripper who had posted an ad on craigslist. She was held at gunpoint before her husband entered the room and her attacker fled.

Markoff's mother, Susan Haynes, declined to comment through a receptionist at her apartment complex in Sherrill, N.Y., where Markoff went to high school. In the 2004 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School yearbook, Markoff was listed as a member of the bowling and golf teams, the National Honor Society, history club and youth court.

He graduated in 2007 from the State University of New York at Albany. Later that year, he had a broad smile in a photograph taken as he put on a "white coat" at a ceremony for incoming BU medical school students.

The university has said Markoff was suspended immediately following his arrest.

Craigslist killing suspect seemed 'all-American'
Craigslist killing suspect seemed 'all-American' - CNN.com

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Friends and acquaintances of Philip Markoff, a medical student accused of killing a woman he may have met through a Craigslist online ad, described the 23-year-old as a model student.

"My girlfriend actually rode the elevator with him a lot alone; it's kind of freaking her out now," said Patrick Sullivan, who lived in the same apartment building as Markoff in Quincy, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb.

"She thought he was kind of the all-American, good-looking guy," Sullivan said. "When she saw him on TV yesterday, she even remarked, 'I can't believe it's him. I always thought he had such a great smile, and he was so nice to me.'"

James Kehoe, a friend of Markoff's from the State University of New York at Albany, where both attended college, said Markoff was "one of the best students I've probably ever encountered."

"He would never put anything in front of his work," he said. "He had great aspirations to be a doctor."

Markoff, a second-year student at Boston University's School of Medicine, is charged with killing 26-year-old Julissa Brisman of New York on April 14 at Boston's Copley Marriott Hotel. Watch acquaintances describe a smart, good-looking guy »

Markoff was arraigned Tuesday and is being held without bail.

His attorney, John Salsberg, told reporters after the hearing that Markoff is "not guilty of the charges. He has his family's support. I have not received any document or report or piece of evidence other than what I heard in the courtroom. All I have at the moment are words -- no proof of anything."

A Boston University spokeswoman said the school suspended Markoff, who has no criminal record, when it learned of the charges on Monday.

"This was a brutal, vicious crime. Savage," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley told reporters. "And it shows that Philip Markoff is a man who's willing to take advantage of women -- to hurt them, to beat them, to rob them."

A procedural not-guilty plea was entered on Markoff's behalf, Conley said.

Evidence from the scene suggests that Brisman "put up a fight," prosecutor Jennifer Hickman said during the hearing Tuesday. Police have said that Brisman, a model, advertised as a masseuse on Craigslist, a popular online classifieds service.

She suffered blunt head trauma, Hickman said, and was shot three times at close range. One of the bullets passed through her heart, killing her, she said.

Markoff is also charged in connection with the April 10 robbery of a woman at a Westin Hotel in Boston. In that case, the woman made arrangements to meet a man through Craigslist for a massage at the hotel, but was held at gunpoint and bound, Hickman said. She was robbed of $800 and personal items and left tied to a door handle with duct tape over her mouth, the prosecutor said in court Tuesday.

The victim was not identified.

Megan McAllister, who identified herself as Markoff's fiancee, maintained his innocence in an e-mail sent to ABC News. McAllister said Markoff "is the wrong man" and "was set up."

"Unfortunately, you were given wrong information as was the public," she wrote. "All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly!"

She accused Boston police of "trying to make big bucks by selling this false story to the TV stations. What else is new??"

Authorities believe the motive in Brisman's death was robbery, Conley told reporters. In executing a search warrant at Markoff's home, police found a firearm, along with restraints and duct tape, he said.

Surveillance videos from the hotel where Brisman was killed showed a tall, clean-cut young blond man in a black windbreaker leaving the property, according to Boston police, who had sought public assistance in identifying the man.

Police traced the Internet communications with Brisman to an e-mail account that had been opened the day before her death, Conley said. Using Internet provider information, they found the computer was at Markoff's residence in Quincy. Authorities put the home under surveillance, Conley said, and "the case just begins to build from there."

Markoff, meanwhile, is "bearing up," Salsberg said. "It's obviously a difficult time for anybody in these circumstances with the charges that have been brought against him. ... He's pleaded not guilty. He is not guilty."

Authorities in Boston are working with police in Warwick, Rhode Island, on what could be a related case. On April 16 at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, a man tied up and demanded money from a 26-year-old dancer who had posted a Craigslist advertisement, Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney said.

The robbery was interrupted when the woman's husband entered the room. After pointing his gun at the husband, the suspect fled, McCartney said. He said the incident "may be related to similar crimes occurring in the Boston area," but that had not been determined.

Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster told CNN the company is "horrified and deeply saddened that our community services have been associated in any way whatsoever with a crime of violence." He promised that Craigslist will evaluate the incident to see whether additional measures could be introduced to protect users.

'Craigslist' Suspect Frequently Dropped Cash at Casino
'Craigslist' Suspect Frequently Dropped Cash at Casino - Crime & Courts : People.com

Alleged Craigslist Killer Phil Markoff only recently began gambling at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut but was a frequent guest in March and April, a source with knowledge of the investigation told PEOPLE.

Markoff, 23, "was at Foxwoods numerous times in March," the source said. "He was always buying in with cash because he couldn't get credit at the casino because [as a Boston University medical student] he didn't have a job. He was there several times in April. He had a reservation to stay at Foxwoods Monday night" – the night of his arrest.

Authorities say Markoff and his fiancée, Megan McAllister, 25, were on their way to Foxwoods Monday when police stopped them on I-95 in Walpole, Mass., around 4 p.m. He was later charged with the murder of aspiring model Julissa Brisman, 26, and the robbery of another woman in Boston on April 10 – both of whom advertised their services on Craigslist. He is being looked at for the attempted robbery of a third woman in Warwick, R.I., on April 16.

Examining Possible Motives
The source says Markoff was "not winning," but authorities are not saying gambling was the primary motive for the crime spree.

On Wednesday, Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley, told PEOPLE, "While we're interested in Mr. Markoff's history and potential financial difficulties, we're also looking at a wide variety of possible motives. We're not ready to chalk these crimes up to gambling debts – or any other factor – just yet."

Representatives of the Foxwoods, which is located in Ledyard, Conn., have declined comment on the Markoff case, other than to furnish a written statement saying, "We do not release information publicly concerning individual patrons; however, we are aware of this situation and are cooperating with the appropriate law enforcement authorities."

Craigslist suspect had victims' items
AP source: Craigslist suspect had victims' items

BOSTON – A Boston University medical student accused of robbing women who advertised erotic services on Craigslist, killing one of them, had items belonging to both victims in his apartment, a law enforcement official said Wednesday.

Philip Markoff is charged with killing a masseuse at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel, in the historic Back Bay district, on April 14. He also is charged in the robbery of a woman at another Boston hotel four days earlier.

A law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said police found items belonging to both women in Markoff's apartment in Quincy, south of Boston. The official wasn't authorized to speak about evidence in the investigation.

The official would not confirm a report by ABC News that the items seized by police included the victims' underwear. ABC News said two unidentified law enforcement sources said Markoff appeared to be collecting underwear as "souvenirs" from the victims.

ABC News did not say how Markoff took the underwear, and he has not been accused of sexually assaulting either woman. Prosecutors have said he went through the purse of the first woman he's accused of robbing.

Investigators are looking into gambling as the possible motivation. The law enforcement official said Markoff was a "frequent visitor" to Foxwoods casino in Connecticut.

Markoff, 23, is accused in the death of Julissa Brisman, of New York City, a masseuse who was found dead in the doorway of her hotel room after being bashed in the head and shot three times. A wake for Brisman was held Wednesday in Manhattan, where her parents live.

Markoff also is accused of robbing and tying up another woman, and police have said there could be more victims.

Defense attorney John Salsberg has said Markoff isn't guilty of the charges and "has his family's support." Markoff's fiancee, Megan McAllister, insists police have the wrong man.

Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Conn., has confirmed it is cooperating with authorities investigating Markoff's gambling habits.

Markoff was arrested on Monday on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts as he and his fiancee drove to Foxwoods.

Business at Foxwoods was brisk Wednesday as gamblers played slot machines and table games and packed the buffets. But none of the employees coming and going at a parking garage recalled seeing Markoff at the casino. Casino managers referred questions to a Foxwoods spokeswoman, who declined to comment, citing the "integrity of the investigation."

Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said that he believes Markoff's original motive was robbery but that he ended up killing Brisman, 26, when she fought back.

The first woman Markoff is accused of robbing said she believes she's alive because she didn't resist.

"I just complied with everything he wanted me to do and I didn't resist him in any way, and I think that's why," she said in an interview with Boston television station WCVB.

Prosecutors have not released her name.

The 29-year-old Las Vegas woman, who also advertised as a masseuse on Craigslist, said she was attacked April 10 at the Westin Copley hotel.

She said she had identified Markoff from the surveillance photos police distributed. She said he was wearing the same clothing and she recognized his face.

The woman said she was able to slip out of the plastic ties she was bound with about a minute after Markoff left and escape. She said she was robbed of $800 in cash, a debit card and $250 in American Express gift cards.

Markoff also is suspected in an attempted robbery in Warwick, R.I., of a woman who had posted a Craigslist ad as a stripper. The woman was held at gunpoint before her husband entered the hotel room and her attacker fled.

Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch said in a statement Wednesday that Warwick police have developed "promising information" about the April 16 robbery at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites.

"Although we're encouraged by the progress being made, this is a complex investigation and is going to take more time," Lynch said.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Wednesday called on Craigslist to stop what he calls "pimping and prostitution in plain sight." He asked the site to immediately eliminate photographs in the "erotic services" section, hire staff to screen images and ads that violate the site's terms of service and fine those who violate those terms.

But Craigslist's CEO, Jim Buckmaster, said criminals who use the site are virtually guaranteed to get caught because they leave electronic trails that are easily traced.

"So don't use Craigslist for crime unless you want to go to jail," he said Wednesday in an interview from San Francisco, where the company is based.

Buckmaster said there have been billions of interactions on Craigslist and added "compared to human society as a whole the risks of Craigslist are low, but they're not zero."

Buckmaster urged users to take precautions when meeting someone found through an online ad, such as choosing a public place or taking a friend along.

Cops: Philip Markoff Kept Gun in Copy of Gray's Anatomy
Cops: Philip Markoff Kept Gun in Copy of Gray's Anatomy - Crime & Courts, : People.com

Investigators searching the apartment of alleged Craigslist killer Philip Markoff in Quincy, Mass., found a handgun in a hollowed-out copy of the medical textbook Gray's Anatomy and women's underwear they believe came from two victims, a law enforcement official tells the Boston Globe.

Cops believe the garments are mementoes from the crimes, the Globe reports, and are testing the gun to see if it is the one used to kill masseuse Julissa Brisman, 26. Police also found duct tape, restraints and ammunition in Markoff's apartment, says the Boston Herald.

On Thursday morning, Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch spokesman Michael Healey told PEOPLE the investigation into whether Markoff attacked a third woman in a Warwick, R.I., hotel on April 16 "has a ways to go."

"At this point it's too early in the investigation to identify Markoff as the guy, but there are strong connections between what happened in Boston and what happened in Rhode Island, and we really can't ignore those connections," Healey said.

The Tip-Off
Three homicide investigators – Sgt. Detective Brian Albert, Lt. Det. Robert L. Merner and Serg. Det. Daniel Duff – also described for the newspaper how they caught the 23-year-old Boston University medical student, saying that the biggest lead they received came from a friend of Brisman's.

The friend looked at Brisman's email account the morning she learned of the masseuse's death and saw messages from a man whom Brisman was scheduled to see the night before. The friend forwarded the email to detectives, who were led to an IP address (a computer identification code) that, on Saturday night, was tracked to Markoff's apartment building.

Fears of Fleeing
Still, they kept Markoff under surveillance, because someone could have logged onto Markoff's home computer and sent the emails. However, on Monday, a victim identified Markoff as her attacker, so the department's fugitive unit staked out his apartment building. There, they saw Markoff and his fiancée, Megan McAllister, leave and, once the couple got in their car, followed them, fearing they were trying to flee.

The investigators pulled the duo over on I-95 in Walpole, Mass., told them the vehicle was being seized through a search warrant and that the couple needed to go to Boston for questioning.

Markoff was "very stoic, very quiet, never asked a question," Merner told the Globe. McAllister was "nervous, confused and full of questions," according to the paper. When informed her fiancé would be charged with murder, "she broke down and cried," the Globe reported.

Craigslist Suspect’s Fiance Warned: “Be Careful!”
Anderson Cooper 360: Blog Archive - Craigslist Suspect’s Fiance Warned: “Be Careful!†« - Blogs from CNN.com

Still here in Boston covering the Craigslist Killer case…

In this city, it’s all everyone is talking about. Even the cab drivers want to know the latest. There’s no escaping it. And the news just keeps coming.

The latest today is that the suspect’s fiance, Megan McAllister, was reportedly warned by her own mother to “be careful” because “there was some guy that killed somebody up in Boston.” The Boston Globe reports that’s what detectives told the newspaper. She clearly had no idea her daughter was engaged to a man now accused of murder.

The detectives say McAllister told them about the warning while she and suspected Craigslist killer, Philip Markoff, were being questioned at police headquarters in Boston on Monday. McAllister was reportedly nervous, confused, and full of questions.

After a while, the detectives said McAllister asked to use a computer and booked herself an airline ticket to New Jersey where her parents live.

Lt. Detective Robert Merner told the newspaper that when Markoff was picked up on his way to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, “he was very stoic, very quiet, never asked a question.”

During questioning, Markoff was reportedly “calm, said nothing about the crimes, and told investigators he wanted a lawyer.” Detectives told the paper the interrogation lasted less than 30 minutes.

Also today, a woman who knew Markoff in college told the New York Daily News he was once aggressive toward her. Morgan Houston says she was in school with Markoff at SUNY-Albany, where he got his undergraduate degree before entering Medical School at Boston University.

About four years ago, she says, on a cold wintery night, he pushed her up against a wall and started kissing her. She says a guy walking by helped her. The Daily News says the two remained friends and that Markoff never did anything like that again. Here’s the link to the woman’s full interview with the Daily News… tell us what you think!
