Clinic aims to reach deaf patients with mental illness
West Park Hospital in Darlington is to begin hosting a bi-monthly outpatient clinic for deaf people suffering from mental illness.
Previously those in the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys requiring a specialist clinic had to travel to Newcastle.
Run by clinical nurse specialists, the service will specifically cater for deaf people with severe, long-term mental illness, such as recurrent depression or bipolar disorder.
Trust wide representative for mental health and deafness, Dr Rebecca Courtney, is delighted to welcome the specialist clinic to Darlington. She said, "We are dedicated to promoting equality and diversity and this is the first step in demonstrating the trust's commitment to ensuring deaf people can access mental health services locally."
The new clinic comes as part of a pledge to provide deaf people with the same level of service enjoyed by hearing people.
