CIRENCESTER’S first club for deaf children is ready to open its doors thanks to support from Soroptimist members and the Gloucester Deaf Association.

A leader and an assistant have now been appointed and the first meeting for deaf children in the area will be at Cirencester’s Opportunity Group, Beeches Road on Saturday, April 2 at 10.30am-12pm.

Soroptimist Jackie Gloyn, who started to lose her hearing 15 years ago, has been leading the campaign to open a club. “The need became apparent when we realised that not a single child from this side of Birdlip attended the excellent two clubs for deaf children held at GDA in Gloucester,” she said.

“It is essential that deaf children get extra support if they are not to become isolated, which in turn will hold them back in every avenue of life,” she explained.

Fundraising for the club is ongoing and a safari supper has been planned for Saturday, May 14.
