Cinemas will put deaf viewers in the picture- Local Cairns News | cairns.com.au

THE silent era of movies will soon be coming to an end for the Far North's hearing impaired.

Cairns will become one of the few cities in Australia to offer cinemas that are more accessible to the deaf and hearing impaired.

From January 6, Birch Carroll and Coyle at Earlville Stockland will provide closed caption sessions of latest release movies.

BCC is also preparing to offer personal devices at its Cairns Central cinemas, to make the movie-going experience more enjoyable for those who are hard of hearing.

Once this is in place next year, the cinema complex will become the only one in the country to offer the new technology.

"People with hearing impairments can enjoy movies as much as anyone else can," BCC Cairns assistant manager Karlee Chamberlin said.

BCC Earville will provide up to six special sessions a week with closed captioning and subtitles.

Captioning for deaf or hearing impaired people will be provided at Cairns Central cinemas through personal Captiview viewing devices.

The system transmits and receives closed captions through wireless technology, allowing the personal devices to be used from any seat in the cinema.

Deaf Services Queensland Cairns interpreter Marleen Blake said the new systems would be a godsend for those who need it.

"They're really excited and have been waiting all year for this,’’ she said. Ms Blake said there were about 160 adults within the Cairns region with hearing difficulties.
