A judge on Tuesday sentenced Chris Brown to five years' probation and six months' community labor for the beating of Rihanna and ordered the R&B singer to stay away from his former girlfriend for the next five years.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg told Brown that he could be sent to state prison if he violated any terms of his sentence, including an order to stay 100 yards away from Rihanna unless they're attending music industry events..

A probation report prepared for Tuesday's sentencing describes two previous violent incidents. It said the first happened about three months before the February beating while the couple was traveling in Europe; Rihanna slapped Brown during an argument, and he shoved her into a wall. In the second instance, Brown allegedly broke the front and passenger side windows on a Range Rover they were driving while visiting Barbados, Rihanna's home country. Neither attack was reported, the probation report states..

Brown will serve his sentence in his home state — Virginia — and his community labor will be overseen by the police chief in Richmond..

The judge said she wanted to ensure that Brown, 20, performs physical labor instead of community service, such as mentoring young people. He will also undergo a year of domestic violence counseling..

Rihanna did not attend Tuesday's sentencing..

At one point, Brown, who was accompanied by his mother, agreed to the terms of the sentence before Schnegg had finished going through them all..

The hearing had been planned for Thursday afternoon, but Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, asked to move up the singer's sentencing to Tuesday. A previous attempt to sentence Brown was postponed when Schnegg said she hadn't received adequate assurances that Brown would perform physical labor if allowed to serve probation in Virginia..

The judge said she was satisfied with a letter presented by Geragos that Richmond Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood will directly oversee Brown's labor program..

After Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in June, Schnegg ordered the pair to stay away from each other and to not contact one another. Her order Tuesday essentially extended that until Brown completes his sentence..

Donald Etra, Rihanna's attorney, has said he didn't think the strict rules were necessary, but that he and Rihanna favored a less-stringent ruling that simply ordered Brown not to annoy, harass or molest the 21-year-old pop singer. He said after Tuesday's hearing that Rihanna did not object to the stay-away order, which allows the former couple to be within 10 yards of each other if they are attending music industry events..

Schnegg said she was aware of reports that Brown had been spotted on several occasions in the same places as Rihanna..

"I am not amused with the chatter that has been on the airwaves and any violation of your probation in this case comes with the potential for state prison," Schnegg told Brown..

A felony charge of making criminal threats was dropped during Tuesday's sentencing..

"We feel that the sentence for Mr. Brown is an equitable one," said Sandi Gibbons, a district attorney's spokeswoman. "He has his future in his hands. He has control of his fate.".

Gibbons said Brown's charge could eventually be reduced to a misdemeanor if he completes his sentence..

Brown was arrested Feb. 8, hours after he was accused of beating Rihanna..

The attack occurred in Los Angeles' Hancock Park neighborhood as Brown drove a rented sports car. A Los Angeles police detective described a brutal attack in a search warrant affidavit filed in the case, stating Brown hit, choked and bit Rihanna and tried at one point to push her from the car..

Brown's career suffered after his arrest, with sponsors dropping him and radio stations refusing to play his music. Both he and Rihanna had to cancel several high-profile appearances, including planned performances at the Grammy Awards the day of the attack..

In a probation report released after the sentencing, Brown is quoted as saying he was "depressed" since the attack and that he "'does not want to carry on that cycle.'".

The report included letters of support for Brown from RCA/Jive Label Group Chairman Barry Weiss as well as an entertainment lawyer and a pastor.

Rihanna and Chris Brown had two previous violent episodes before the Feb. 8 fight, which ultimately led to Brown's arrest and felony conviction, court documents reveal.

The "Umbrella" singer allegedly slapped Brown in a heated argument three months prior to the February incident, according to Brown's probation review released Tuesday.

In that previous fight, which occurred in Europe, Brown responded by pushing Rihanna into a wall, the documents say. The couple "were involved in a verbal dispute and [she] slapped [him]." Brown "responded by shoving her into a wall."

A second fight occurred about three weeks prior to the Feb. 8 incident.

Brown and Rihanna "were visiting Barbados and were driving a Range Rover loaned to them," according to the documents. "They had an argument inside the car. [Brown] exited and broke the front driver and passenger side windows of the car. No one was injured during the incident."

The documents also reveal that in the Feb. 8 incident, which began after Brown allegedly received a text message from a previous lover, that Rihanna "said she became 'enraged' and slammed both of her fists against the dashboard," which led to Brown pulling the Lamborghini over and trying to force her out, which escalated into a physical fight.

Lawyers for both Rihanna, 21, and Brown, 20, weren't immediately available for comment.

In a June 26 interview with his probation officer, Brown stated that since the Feb. 8 fight, he had been very "depressed." Brown stated he grew up watching his mother being physically abused and said he did not want to "carry on that cycle."

Brown repeatedly told the officer he regretted the incident, and said he initially wanted to plead guilty right away, but his attorney advised against it.

"I want to take responsibility for my mistake," Brown told the officer, adding he is "totally remorseful for what I have done."

Brown was formally sentenced Tuesday to six months of community labor, five years probation, and was ordered not to contact Rihanna for the next five years.

Chris Brown will spend 1,400 hours removing graffiti and washing cars for assaulting Rihanna.

Brown, 20, was formally sentenced in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday to six months of community labor in Virginia after he pleaded guilty in June to one count of felony assault against Rihanna, 21.

Brown's six-month labor sentence will be supervised by the chief of police in Richmond, Va., who wrote to the judge that Brown would perform graffiti removal, cleaning and maintaining grounds, and washing cars. "Brown's labor hours will be flexible to accommodate his entertainment career," according to DA spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.

The singer, who looked solemn and wore a black pinstripe suit and matching tie, was also sentenced to five years of probation, a year of domestic violence classes, and was ordered to pay fines. He was accompanied in the courtroom by his mother and at least one bodyguard.

As part of his plea bargain with prosecutors, a second felony charge of making criminal threats was dropped. Rihanna was not present for the hearing.

Donald Etra, an attorney for the "Umbrella" singer, had previously asked the judge for lesser restrictions on communication and contact between the two singers.

However, L.A. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg ordered Brown not to have any communication with Rihanna for the next five years, which includes phone and email contact. Brown was also ordered not to come within 100 yards of Rihanna – 10 yards if they're both at the same event.

Toward the end of the hearing, Judge Schnegg warned Brown, in an apparent reference to reports that the two singers may have had contact against court order: "I'm not immune to any chatter on the airwaves. Do you understand, Mr. Brown, that any violation of this order is a violation of your probation and it comes with the possible penalty of prison?" Brown responded "Yes."

Asked if Rihanna was disappointed by the stay-away order, her lawyer stated: "There were no surprises today. The decision was up to the court, not Rihanna."

Etra added that Rihanna does have the option of asking the court to soften the stay-away order down the line, but he wouldn't say if she plans to do so. Etra added that while the order specifically forbids Brown from contacting Rihanna, she was also warned by the court back in June not to contact him.

Last month, Brown publicly apologized for the incident, saying, "I have told Rihanna countless times, and I am telling you today, that I am truly sorry and that I wasn't able to handle the situation both differently and better."

Asked if Rihanna has forgiven Brown for the incident, her lawyer replied, "I do not discuss her personal life in public."

Brown and his attorney, Mark Geragos, left the courthouse without making a comment.

The sentencing had been delayed from 5 August as a response was still awaited from officials in Virginia as to whether Brown could serve his community labour in that state.

The judge said she was now satisfied that the labour in Virginia would be physical and would include clearing rubbish, washing cars and grounds cleaning.

Brown must also attend a 52-week violence counselling programme. The singer was also fined $2,500.

He must reappear in court on 19 November for a progress report.

Brown was arrested on 8 February after the dispute in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles.

Both stars cancelled their scheduled appearances at the Grammy Awards shortly afterwards.

Court documents detailed how the two got into a fight when Rihanna found a text message from another woman on Brown's phone.

He was then accused of trying to force the Umbrella singer out of their rented Lamborghini sports car, shoving her head against the passenger window and repeatedly punching her in the face.

Brown admitted that his conduct was "inexcusable" in a video apology that appeared on his website.

He has also said that he repeatedly apologised to Rihanna.
