Two society leaders have been praised for their commitment to deaf people across north Derbyshire.
The Duke of Devonshire, president of the Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Deaf Society, and Martin Thacker, vice-president, have notched up a combined 50 years of service in their respective roles.
Speaking at the society’s AGM, chairman David Schofield said: “It’s fantastic to think that both the Duke and Martin have given commitment to deaf people across north-east Derbyshire over such a long period of time.”
Martin received an MBE 11 years ago for his service to the deaf community.
During the AGM at the Tontine Road Community Centre, reports were presented on fundraising initiatives such as a grand bingo evening attended by representatives from deaf communities across the East Midlands.
Members, who are profoundly deaf, were able to reflect on a positive year that included outings to Chatsworth, Kings Lynn and Brighton.
