Charity for the deaf receives £300 from Sussex Police - Local - Mid Sussex Times
A CHARITY which helps deaf people in Mid Sussex has received a £300 donation from the Neighbourhood Policing scheme.
The donation came after the police and Worthing Talking Hands club got together with the help of Action for Deafness to discuss how the police could better support deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
Organisers said many issues were raised including problems deaf and hard-of-hearing people faced when dealing with the police, especially when the person may be using British Sign Language – and potential solutions were discussed.
A spokeswoman for the charity said: “The police were very grateful for the comments and these will help them put together systems to help those with a hearing loss.”
Action for Deafness will be using the money to help continue supplying free services to deaf and hard-of-hearing people. You can visit one of their resource centres at 5a Hazelgrove Road, Haywards Heath, or 55-57 Rowlands Road, Worthing, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. A wide range of telephones, doorbells and listening aids are available to try.
