Went to Best Buy. Got lucky in that my sister was with me, and her nephew (in law?) was working in the wireless dept. He was very patient. He guided me to purchase a Samsung Knack SCH-U310 for about $40 a month plan. Texting is not great, but it has what I needed, including hearing aid compatible and headset jack. I tested it and found the sound quality to be good. Not sure I will always have same hearing levels, but with time I can make adjustments. Thanks to everyone that offered guidance!
