In a likely first for a Catholic university, Chicago's DePaul University launched a minor in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies this winter.

"We were basically meeting student demand," said Gary Cestaro, program director of the new minor.

Cestaro said that although he is "sure that outside the university it will displease some Catholics," there was little controversy within the school about the program.

"DePaul's Catholic identity is very important to us, but we see it as part of the Vincentian tradition, which means a commitment to social justice and community," he said. "From that perspective, it's a no-brainer."

The university is also hoping to host the second conference of gay faculty at Catholic colleges and universities in spring 2007.

Meanwhile, the University of Notre Dame is debating the future of two campus events, the Queer Film Festival and a staging of "The Vagina Monologues," amid concerns they conflict with Roman Catholic beliefs.

The Rev. John Jenkins, the university's president, invited public comments about whether the events should be canceled in coming years. This year the Queer Film Festival's name will be changed and the "Monologues" production will be in a smaller venue than usual.

"Those two events have sparked quite a bit of controversy over the past few years," said Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown. "Father Jenkins thought the broader issue of academic freedom within the context of our Catholic character was an issue that deserved conversation."
