VuvuzelaOnline - Casual Day at Wits

The eleventh Casual Day is celebrated throughout the country, and also at Wits, today under the theme “Use your power to empower”.

On the official website the theme is explained: “Unleash the power of your R10 sticker donation to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities”.

Since the first Casual Day in 1995 several millions of rands were raised for South Africans with disabilities. Among the beneficiaries of the event are the Deaf Federation of South Africa, Epilepsy South Africa and the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa, who also manages the day.

In 2005 more than R10 million was raised with the Casual Day initiative. Among those who benefited from this amount of money was the Association for Sensory Disabled in the Western Cape, Prinshof School in Pretoria who bought Braille equipment and the Institute for the Deaf in Worcester, who donated their money to a nursery school for deaf children.

The whole idea behind Casual Day is that people buy stickers for a price of R10 from selected outlets and dress up according to a certain theme on the first Friday of September.

This year the participants were encouraged to dress up like superheroes (or super villains), complete with capes, caps and costumes.

Wits’ Disabled Students Program (DSP) sold Casual Day stickers on campus and received R1 for every ticket sold. DSP also held a Disability Awareness Campaign on Thursday, during which lecturers and students were encouraged to go to lectures in wheelchairs and on crutches, in an effort to make them aware of the struggles faced by disabled persons.

Casual Day is South Africa’s principal fundraising event for the benefit of those with disabilities.
