Ailing Castro gives power to brother 5 minutes ago

HAVANA - Fidel Castro temporarily relinquished his presidential powers to his brother Raul on Monday night and told Cubans in a statement that he had undergone surgery.

The Cuban leader said he had suffered intestinal bleeding, apparently due to stress from recent public appearances in Argentina and Cuba, according to the letter read live on television by his secretary, Carlos Valenciaga.

Castro said that extreme stress "had provoked in me a sharp intestinal crisis with sustained bleeding that obligated me to undergo a complicated surgical procedure."

Castro said he was temporarily relinquishing the presidency to his brother and successor Raul, the defense minister.

He said the move was of "a provisional character."

He said celebrations scheduled for his 80th birthday on Aug. 13 were to be postponed until Dec. 2, the 50th anniversary of Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces.

Castro said he would also temporarily relinquish his duties as first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba to Raul, who turned 75 in June and who has been taking on a more public profile in recent weeks.

I think we may be seeing the beginning of the end of Fidel's reign.

Um....do we dare hope?

If Fido...er Fidel goes, then there is his brother for a couple more years.

I'm very interested in seeing what happens after the Castros go.

I really do that Cuba will cease with it's communism one day in the near future.

True. That's why I posted this. It's always been my opinion that when a ruler steps down, and a successor is named, that successor is usually worse than the previous ruler.

I don't see any difference with this, however, once the brother is done with his reign, then we may see a new Cuba.

As you say, we can hope.

There's a lot of truth in that...but you never know...eh?

Do you think they are really going to unless it's some watered down version of the truth?

I can see it now.. "Castro's fine. Just a bellyache. No big deal."

Communism at it finest.

Hoohah!
You got that right!

Eh, true, I suppose. But, I don't hold out a lot of hope for Cuba until the brother is no longer in power.

I still believe we have a few more years of Castro before the brother assumes power for good. Then, we get to deal with bro. And, then, who knows?

I just hope when my niece and nephew grow up Cuba will be a democracy.

Would be a nice. :)

Oh, I agree we haven't seen the last of the Castros yet...

Call me crazy, but I actually admire Castro for a few things.

Like what? Castro's world famous healthcare system and his medical research ?

Actually more like his relationship with Pope John Paul II, despite his differing beliefs. He might be a political wacko, but he's a smart guy.

Fidel Castro killed his own mother who was an Evangelical Christian !

I don't admire him for that at all.

Source?

I agree with you that he should have sourced his statement. It's possible that Fidel had Christians killed. It's done in other communist or dictatorship countries, so why not Cuba?

But, yes... If you're going to make statements such as this, then provide info to back up your claim!
