Cast a vote to help deaf children - San Bernardino County Sun
People have the opportunity to vote on just about everything these days, including which contestant is voted off the latest reality show.
Though all votes are important to somebody, some votes really make an important difference.
Clerc's Children, a national nonprofit organization that provides early intervention service for deaf and hard of hearing chilren and their parents, hopes to rally the vote to make that difference.
Santa Monica-based Clerc's Children has been accepted into Pepsi's Refresh Project 50K grant challenge. The project allows people across America to vote for charities worthy of grant funds.
Out of thousands of submissions, Clerc's Children was accepted as one of the charities in the challenge.
Since the contest launch, Clerc's Children has shot up from 1,000th place to 37th place.
Clerc's Children hopes to inspire community members to become dedicated voters and vote daily to elevate the group into the Top 10 and win a $50,000 grant.
Chaffey College American Sign Language (ASL) instructor Sonya Wilson is among local supporters trying to
get the word out and encourage everyone to cast their votes.
"I was born deaf to a hearing mother," Wilson said via e-mail.
"My mother would have appreciated Clerc's Children. My mother was so frustrated going from doctor to doctor. She did not realize I was deaf until I was five years old."
Clerc's Children offers a web-based dual language curriculum filled with auditory and visual stimulation, which plays an important role in developing age appropriate reading, writing, and communication skills.
"There is no `bilingual friendly' service out there but Clerc's Children," she wrote.
"Most parents are afraid of signing for many reasons, but research shows that deaf children benefit from both languages: ASL & English. If my mom had Clerc's Children, she would have been allowed to know who I am. She died before we could ever communicate in ASL. So you see why I am passionate about sharing ASL with families."
