91-Year-Old Man Had Beaten Cancer Twice

DETROIT -- A 91-year old casino enthusiast died this week trying to chase down the thief who stole his winnings.

For nearly a century, Frank Pierce lived a life most could only wish for.

At 91, the two-time cancer survivor from Southgate was active and always in high spirits. He was like a father to Diana Zgrzemski, who said Pierce believed luck was on his side the afternoon they arrived at Greektown Casino.

"He went over to one of the ladies on the island and said, 'Look what I just won,' and someone may have heard him," she said. "I think it was $240 he had just won because he just walked in, playing the dollar machines."

Just as Pierce was about to cash the ticket, a 56-year-old man took it. Pierce chased him outside, flagged down two police officers and pointed them in the direction of the suspected thief.

Then he collapsed and died of a heart attack.

"This is something Frank would have done at 91 years old," Zgrzemski said. "Very healthy. He would have protected himself for what he did."

Police did arrest the suspected thief and recovered the stolen ticket.

The casino CEO said officials were cooperating with police and called such incidents "extremely rare."
