Captioned Telephone Service Helps Deaf and Hearing Imparied Community in New York

The New Year will bring hope for more than 24 million Americans, who are hard of hearing, have experienced hearing loss later in life, or deaf individuals who prefer to use their own voice

The New York Public Service Commission, New York Relay and Sprint will release New York Relay Captioned Telephone Service on Jan. 1, 2007. The assistive technology of the service will allow people with hearing troubles, to communicate more naturally with family and friends.

The New York Commission reportedly approved captioned telephone service in July 2006 and has proposed rollout of 300 captioned phones per month.

Developed by Ultratec, The New York Relay Captioned Telephone Service also requires a special CapTel-equipped phone in order to place a call to the New York Relay Captioned Telephone Service.

Although the CapTel phone works like any traditional phone with callers talking and listening to each other, captions are provided live for every call. These captions are displayed on the CapTel phone’s built-in screen enabling users to read the words while listening to the voice of the other person.

This capability allows conversations to flow more naturally and smoothly with normal interruptions and expressed emotions.

The Captioned Telephone services are available free of cost, 24 hours a day, seven days a week through out the year.

“Partnering with the New York Public Service Commission and New York Relay to offer Captioned Telephone Service is important to our strategy of providing communications options for individuals who are hard of hearing or deaf,” said Mike Ligas, director ofSprint ( News - Alert) Relay in a press release.

“Captioned Telephone service is appealing for many individuals as it allows them to communicate more naturally with family and friends.”
