Hey Folks,

I use cap tel at my old home, and I use it to call people for everything I need to do it works awesome, there is text that comes automatically kind of like closed caption and it texts me back everything the person says as they speak to me.

Anyhow, my company I work for, Southwest Airlines is very interested in getting this phone for me to use at work. However they have a digital line, and the phone I have and I use is analog.

We cannot find a text type phone like cap tel or that IS cap tel that'd work in the same way, but for digital lines.

I am able to hear on the phone and understand sometimes, but folks have to speak clear, and slowly to make sure I understand, and it would help a lot if we were able to get this type of phone.

Any ideas or anything you have heard of?

Thanks folks!
Alex

I know you can use Cap-Tel with digital service, but you have to get some piece of equipment. Ask cap-tel what you need. My house gets struck by lightening a lot, so I stop using that phone (it was fried), but I loved it when I had it.

Same as me. I'm hearing impaired and I sometimes have speech problems. Even if they have to speak as clearly as possible for me, even a very clear voice would make me ask to repeat and sometimes the repeating may not help, possibly due to 20th century phone quality, which made it sound like I'm listening to a low-quality tape recorder.

Not to hijack a thread, but I have a question. Would it be worth signing up for a CapTel phone from a Florida Relay Service (I live in Tallahassee) early on if I want to wait for an IP-based CapTel service? Currently, while I do have a software TTY, it's unused and I've been paying $30 from Vonage that I haven't been using VoIP for so long. I may be thinking about cancelling Vonage Service, which my only option is to call Vonage to cancel my service but I don't think Vonage will accept relay calls, which may tell me that I may have to use CapTel to call Vonage, which is not worth it if I have to fill out an application form to send it to Florida Relay Service.

Again, sorry for hijacking.

Have you used a surge protector such as Belkin Compact Surge Protector? The surge protector can help suppress the spike comming through the phoneline.

I have no idea as to the answer for you question. At the time I had Cap-tel we were paying for normal phone service. My audiologist told me I could go to this place and they would give me a cap-tel phone and then sign me up for Sprint service. It didn't take anytime besides driving to the outreach place and filling out some forms.

There isn't any kind of "digital" CapTel-like service. You will need to ask your employer for workplace accomodations and install an analog line to use the phone. It should be possible, though maybe not super easy, for them to do so to accomodate your need.

Since there have been no announcements as to how soon IP CapTel will be available, if you want CapTel now, you should probably go right ahead and get your CapTel phone and either test out CapTel on Vonage (results may vary) or go straight to using a regular telephone service.

IP CapTel, while being demonstrated in several places in the past year, hasn't come to light. You'll need to ask Sprint or CapTel when they think it'll be available.

OK. I'll try that. I've tried using TTY through Vonage and it worked flawlessly without much of a single character error.

And all I saw is this:
CapTel - The Captioned Telephone

And man... I can't wait... I'll never know when there'll be an IP-based Captel service... *sigh*

Maybe

tells me why the news have shown up early... Hmm...

I haven't seen any latest news from Captel... I think it's been pretty quiet lately.
