A 52-year-old man has become the first in Canada to be convicted of murder under a new law that aims to prevent the reckless spread of AIDS, the Australian Associated Press reports.

Johnson Aziga was found guilty this weekend of murdering two women and sexually assaulting others by not warning them that he was infected with the virus that causes AIDS before having unprotected sex with them.

Aziga was diagnosed with HIV in 1996 and was under a public health order to inform potential lovers.

"It's certainly precedent-setting here in Canada because we now have a conviction for first-degree murder involving HIV transmission," prosecutor Karen Shea told the Ottawa Citizen.

Seven of Aziga's partners became infected and two died of AIDS-related cancers. Sentencing is scheduled for May 7.

woah that's crazy i didn't realize we had a law passed about that. hmm learn something new everyday. I don't believe he really thought about the consequences of his actions. I wonder what's going to happen with his sentencing

Hope this precedent will act as a deter others with that sort of diseases from being careless, deliberately or not. But then it won't work on people with no conscience.

Another reason why we need to use condoms. Male or female condoms.

One reason why I have been celibate for many, many years is the possibility of catching Aids!

It's unconceivable to me why anyone, anybody that knew they had Aids, would knowingly give it to others!

It's a myth that older people "don't catch this disease" because they do! Any age, even babies born with it.
