I am NOT sure if I really understand this verse ????

Proverbs 17:17 (King James Version , KJV)
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Please help and explain/re-phrase.

I think it means that a friend will always remain a loyal but for a brother, he is born to help in time of need.

A friend and brother are not the same when it comes to people's situations - IMO.

"Brothers and Sisters"

I guess that I have to remember that
I have my own blood brother/sister from
my own family at the same time I have
another brothers/sisters from my church.

Perhaps "Friend" is more from the World.
 
"At all times, love a friend, for he is born a brother for adversity," is the translation used in the Complete Tanach with Rashi's commentary, though the JPS differs.

Rashi's comment on that verse is that a true friend is like a brother when you face adversity.

CEV translate like this, " A friend is a always a friend, and relatives are born to share our troubles." As I see meant, true friend will share and confide to each others. Notice we have family problems? We share our problems and how to deal with those problems. Now, as you said as friend as of world, like friend of the world is enemy of God, it doesn't mean can't be friend, it mean don't be like them. Like this you have a friend who is drinking, you wish he or she stop, but our job is set a good example and true, don't fall into their influence toward you. But don't look down on them. We share our problem, that is a true friend and should be confide, not to leak to share others about the person problem, that's the biggest damage, and that's dishonor God.
