Call for alarms for deaf tenants in West Sussex - Midhurst and Petworth Today
People living in rented accommodation who are deaf or hard of hearing are being urged to make sure their landlord has installed suitable fire alarms.
The call by West Sussex fire and rescue service coincides with Deaf Awareness Week.
Jackie Boyle, the service's community fire and road safety officer, said it was always stressing the importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home – rented or owned.
"We are reminding deaf and hard of hearing people living in rented accommodation their landlord may have installed smoke alarms," she added.
"But they may not be aware of your particular circumstances and it is essential that you have a smoke alarm which meets your individual needs.
"People who are deaf or hard of hearing may need different ways of making them aware the alarm has been activated.
"We offer all deaf or hard of hearing people – whether they're in rented or owned accommodation – a free service to fit specially-designed alarms with vibrating pads and/or flashing strobe light."
