I don't know if this a great place to post it under "Comp Elec, IT & Gaming", but it's more about going green, conserve electricity and bring down the cost of your electric bill...

Did you know that cable/DVR box eat up more electricity than Refrigerator?

Which I have known for while and I been using timer to shut down cable/DVR, DVD player, and TV at midnight and then turn it back on at around 9 am.

Many of the people thought Refrigerator used up more electricity than any other appliances.

That is interesting. I thought that the refrigerators would be one that uses most electricity. Hmm..
 
Yeah, when I brought home watt analyzer/meter from work to measure how many KWh and the result for stand alone cable/dvr box is about 304 (without DVR is about 245) kwh... and the refrigerator is about 350 kWh but that fridge goes on and off where cable/dvr run 24/7. Then you add DVD player and TV, that beat the fridge...

Amazing huh...
 
Interesting!! I now have SureWest HD-DVR converter, no longer have Time Warner's DVR. I haven't checked to see how it rated on power consumption.

Be careful when you read, it said NEWER fridge. What does that mean? Its obviously. Today fridge are far more efficient than it was few years ago. If you got couple years old or older, then it is likely to use more energy than cable box. If you got more than 10 years old fridge then it is whole different as they are less efficient ones.
 
Good thing, I don't have DVR and don't watch much but on Netflix whatever have subtitle available.
 
My 6,500 btu window A/C probably uses less energy than the cable box and DVR. :lol:
 
Plasma tv's are the king of power consumption.

Gas or electric Refrigerator?? Which one? :rofl: 1950s have Ref that runs on natural gas (it's pretty much the same idea like RV Ref runs on Propane (per selection either Propane or Electric))
 
The most efficient refrigerator is the sound-cooled refrigerator. I've seen them selling one for $1,200 for one that is as tall as your chest. It only requires 120v a/c and uses far less than 200 watts (I can't recall exactly wattage). I only saw that few years ago and it's related to 12 volts home appliance and high efficient appliances website. I can't find it but I can provide other link that explains how sound-cooled ref works

Hope that someday we will have A/C for the house that use very little electricity to run (maybe use car battery to operate :rofl: ).

Maybe that cable co would upgrade DVR into energy efficient one. Perhap the one use SSD drive instead of Hard Drive.

I put my TV, DVD player, etc on a power strip and click it off when I'm not watching TV. I calculated it reduced my electric bill by at least $4 a month. I don't have a new TV though. I imagine it would make a big difference for the new TVs.

Electric.
 
A wall switch controls the outlet for my entire entertainment unit, including computers because even when turned off some electronics still eat power, so it saves a lot my turning off the outlet.
