'It was like a treasure hunt — the more you dug the more you found,' city official says

Police in Florida have seized 60 pounds of silver coins that had been stashed for decades inside the walls of a recently demolished home.

According to officials in St. Cloud, Fla., glass pickle jars holding more than 2,000 coins shattered while city workers were leveling a 1915 bungalow, turning the demolition into a momentary slot machine.

"It was like a treasure hunt — the more you dug the more you found," one of those workers, Melissa Howes, told the Orlando Sentinel. "We thought we might be able to keep it like finders keepers, but it was city property."

The most recent owner of the 776-square-foot house, Lamarr LoMax Lowe, a former Walt Disney World employee, abandoned it after racking up $511,500 in code-enforcement liens, the paper reported.

The seizure included 861 half-dollars, 1,016 quarters, 202 dimes and three nickels, police records show. Some of the oldest coins were dated 1917, officials said.

"We're going to have them appraised to see if they're worth more by weight or as collectible coins," St. Cloud Police Chief Pete Gauntlett told reporters last week.

Gauntlett believes the coins may have been hidden inside the walls by a former owner during the Great Depression.

Thats why people need to keep their mouths shut !!!

A friend of mine who worked another department with the city ( refuse ) they picked up a dumpster full of 4" pvc pipes with caps on them from an abandoned house being cleaned out. At the dump they unloaded and one guy was currious of what was inside them, so they busted one open and it was filled with cash (greenbacks/dollars...lol) so they got their trucks and loaded them in the back, told the boss they wanted them for a home project.
All was good, took them home and cut them open, had several thousand dollars they were going to split between them... Yeah, all was good, UNTIL one guy , just one guy with loose lips sunk the ship. Told another worker about the find, then they told the boss. They were instructed to bring all the cash in or get terminated. Yeah, all that $$$$ turned into 0, nothing, nada.... thanks to a loudmouth.... They are no longer friends.
But like the guys finding sunken ships. They make a scene and uncle sam claims it belongs to the government or another country and its gone. I mean ok it sunk in 1700 and nobody made an effort to recover it, now we find it and they take it... BS, If i dive and find a million or more in gold, Im melting that shit down and selling it by the gram.

I kept my mouth closed....in uk we got something called treasure trove it mean not all things you find can you sell...e.g people find things on bank river Thames that stuff go to London museum so find pot of gold not always got value to finder...has America got same sort of laws that the State claims it

Someone found a lot of Viking coins half mile from me,on farm land...it took sometime and decided not treasure trove so the treasure hunters and farmer allowed to keep it....four million quid worth in ground half mile away:cry:

someone in Colorado found buried coffee cans just a few month back with gold coins, supposedly were not circulated due to defect but were supposedly stolen from the Federal Reserve. The finders put them on ebay to sell and the government put a stop to it and confisicated them... I think they did fight and get some back... but were looking at Millions for being so rare
