Leonard Hall commentary: Busy weekend of events for deaf community - KansasCity.com

It is amazing to see how active the deaf community has been in Olathe. Every weekend, there always are some events for anyone to attend.

This weekend is no exception, as there are several events scheduled, including:

* This Friday, The Deaf Cultural Center will have its annual Fall Fundraising Soup Day, 11 a.m. to 2 p.,. Friday at the Kansas School for the Deaf’s Student Center. The meal costs $7 and the menu features chili with toppings or potato soup, coffee, water or tea, and assorted desserts. Proceeds will go to the Brick Fund. This is one of the most enjoyable lunch events around.

* “Black Sand,” an American Sign Language movie, will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at KSD’s Murphy Auditorium. All of the actors and actresses in the movie use sign language. The Friday evening showing includes open captioning for hearing people to read while Saturday’s showing does not have open captioning.

“Black Sand” is about four deaf students who visit a tropical rain forest resort in Costa Rica with the purpose of having an adventure vacation at an aunt’s place. Beautiful waterfalls and lush green jungles are the first sign of heaven but there’s also a darker side to paradise.

The four are warned not to venture outside after dark because something from the jungle is stalking the vacationers. Whatever it is, is it protecting a secret or is it something so unspeakable?

Tickets are $11 and the movie is open to the public. Contact Tammy at Tlw4mom@gmail.com for more information.

* The Olathe Club of the Deaf will have its social night of poker, card games and other activities at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, the club also will have its annual Christmas Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Craft booths will be open to the public. Contact cmosiman@sbcglobal.net for more information.

* On Saturday morning, the Olathe East High School Leadership team, led by student Madison Walsh, will have a free Deaf Awareness event at Black Bob Park, 151st Street and Black Bob Road in Olathe. The event will start with a 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. After the run/walk, there will be many booths, including children’s booths (coloring page station, ASL storytelling with voice, etc.) and hearing awareness and deaf culture booths. Deaf culture booths will include technology demonstrations, relay services and more.

There will be a lot of interesting information about deaf awareness for the public. Everything is free and many vendors and non-profit organizations will have booths at this event. Each booth will have some kind of drawing for prizes for people atttending the event from 9 a.m. to Noon.
