Tonight my date and I went out to dinner - it was just at a chain restaurant but we had a good time. At the end of the meal the (very nice) waitress gave us the receipt and pointed out that there's a survey we can fill out and have a chance to win money prizes etc. Now I know the prizes are unlikely, but I decided to fill out the survey because I wanted to give her good feedback - I know people in jobs like that depend on good responses for different things: maybe raises, maybe keeping their jobs.

So I go online and fill out the survey, and there's one question per page, then you hit next. So I answer question after question, the last of which (well, the last one I answer) is my email address. Sure - they need to contact the winners, so they need a way to reach you, I get that. But then they want my full name and phone number etc. I hate that! I'm not willing to give out my phone number, and the only option besides giving it was to quit the survey, which meant that everything I said about our waitress was lost. That really bugs me. The have you jump through all these hoops, tying and going through each page, and at the end they ask you questions you might not be willing to answer, so the whole thing was a waste of time.

This has happened to me before, nothing new, but still frustrating.

You can still say something nice about your waitress by calling the restaurant or sending a letter through the mail. I never answer any surveys because they ask too many personable questions that have nothing to with the product. If your are married , how much money you made , how far did you go to school . It's none of their business .

Yeah, I hate all that demographic stuff. And agreed: it's none of their business! I was thinking about sending a letter to say some good things about the waitress, but every time I start composing, I just end up ranting about how disgusted I am about how they run their surveys. I don't want to infect a nice letter with all that negative stuff. Maybe I need to write *two* letters.

There you go! That is a good idea and sometime it just help to write a nasty letter to get it off your chest. I once got a phone from a woman saying she was doing a survey. I told the woman that I am doing one too and asked her how many people has she bugged today? She said nothing and I told her she bugged at least one person today , me! She called around dinner time. I can't stand that. That woman was totally speechless. LOL!

You did the right thing. I even think the waitress herself was misled because a true performance survey does not ask for personal info, or at least makes contact info optional but not necessary. The survey you filled out is likely managed by a third partybbusiness which will likely bombard you with useless solicitations. Like the above mentioned, praise your waitress personally through management, or a nice tip. :)
