bus carrying children from a New Jersey school for deaf students crashed into two tractor trailers and a passenger car, seriously injuring the bus driver and disrupting northbound traffic on Interstate 95 for hours, state police said.
Keith Schmitt, 55, of North Plainfield, N.J., was flown by state police helicopter to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after the Wednesday night crash. His condition could not be determined early Thursday.
The bus, owned by Stout's Charter Service of Trenton, N.J., was carrying 27 students, boys and girls ranging in age from 11 years to 15 years, and five staff members from the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf in Trenton, state police 1st Sgt. Russell Newell said. The students were returning to New Jersey after a basketball game at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Columbia.
Newell gave this account of the accident:
About 7:30 p.m., the bus rear-ended a tractor trailer on I-95 near interstate 695. The bus began to roll backward and was struck by a small passenger vehicle. The bus continued to roll in reverse and hit a second tractor trailer in the adjacent lane.
The bus was struck along the left rear and came to rest in a ditch.
The passengers on the bus were taken to four Baltimore area hospitals for medical assessment. Two students suffered minor injuries.
The charter service sent a second driver and bus to take all passengers back to New Jersey.
No charges were filed in the accident, which was under investigation, troopers said.
