BU deaf studies program receives training grants - Boston Business Journal:
The Program in Deaf Studies at Boston University's School of Education received four training grants totaling $995,000.
The university said the funding will be used for training of future teachers of the deaf.
"These grants come at a critical time, as it is estimated that 20 percent of the teachers of the deaf will retire in the next few years with an additional turnover of about 10 percent," the school said in a prepared statement. "This creates a significant shortage of approximately 2,500 qualified teachers in the United States. Currently, all of the programs in the country combined produce only 200 teachers per year, and not all of those trained enter the profession."
Three grants are from the Massachusetts Department of Education and one is from the U.S Department of Education, according to BU
