LTA | Brookes continues family tradition at 2010 National Deaf Tennis Champs
Surrey’s Bethany Brookes has followed in her mother Fiona’s footsteps to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2010 National Deaf Tennis Championships at the Gosling Tennis International High Performance Centre, Welwyn.
Bethany won all of her matches in a round robin competition, dropping only one game as she went on to claim the crown that her mother won 22 years ago in 1988.
Bethany was also named ‘Most Improved Player’ at the British Deaf Tennis Association AGM, marking a great year for the sixteen year old, who was runner up in the Women’s Singles at the 2009 Championships.
The Men’s Singles Consolation sees Ashley Dunn face Louis Neethling in the first semi-final and Nick Ansell playing Shaun O’Brien in the second.
A thrilling first round encounter in the Men’s Singles between Max Thorne and Nick Ansell saw the match going to three sets. Thorne fought back from 0-4 down to lead 6-5 with Ansell serving to stay in the match. Thorne broke Ansell to love to win 7-5 to set up a quarter-final match with third seed Sidney Falconer.
Former champion Falconer overcame Thorne in the quarter-finals, dropping only one game in the first set. He now faces second seed Dan Tunstall in the first of the Men’s Singles semi-final to be played on Bank Holiday Monday. Wiltshire-based Tunstall beat Ben Kelly 6-0, 6-2 earlier in the competition to progress to the next stage.
Fourth seed Jamie King progressed to the Men’s Singles semi-finals by overcoming Louis Neethling in the first round and Jack Clifton in the quarter finals. Hampshire’s King will face eight-time champion and top seed Peter Willcox in the second semi-finals match.
Surrey’s Willcox began his quest for a ninth championship title by beating Richard Hounslow 6-2, 6-0 in the quarter finals, having had a bye for the first round. Finals day is set to be a high-class affair with all four seeds battling for the title.
In the Men’s doubles, Nick Ansell and Richard Hounslow beat Ashley Dunn and Chris Kenward 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals. They then came up against top seeds Peter Willcox and Sidney Falconer in the semi-final where they came unstuck, going down 6-1, 6-1. In the other semi-final second seeds Jamie King and Dan Tunstall beat Shaun O’Brien and Max Thorne 6-0, 6-1. The final of the Men’s Doubles is an all-seed affair with King and Tunstall facing Falconer and Willcox.
In addition to the Men’s Singles, Men’s Consolation Singles and Men’s Doubles Finals, the Over 35 Singles final will be fought out between Mark Perry and Louis Neethling. Triumphant Women’s Singles champion Bethany Brookes teams up with her mother Fiona Brookes to take on Maisy Gibbs and Sophie Paul in the Women’s Doubles. Gibbs is also in action with Max Thorne in the Mixed Doubles final, facing Jamie King and Bethany Brookes.
The 2010 National Deaf Tennis Championships is supported by the Tennis Foundation, Babolat and Highland Spring.
Entry is free for all spectators, with the finals set to take place on Bank Holiday Monday, 3 May.
