Bridging Two Worlds, USPS Deaf Awareness Month > Government > Events > Lakewood > YourHub.com
What:In recognition of "National Deaf Awareness Month" this September, the public is cordially invited to attend free activities planned at Post Offices along the Denver front range area in September. (See dates, times and locations below.)
The special events will celebrate and bring awareness of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. There are approximately 60,000 deaf or hard-of-hearing residents in Colorado including an estimated 20,000 in the Denver metro area.
Activities will provide attendees with an understanding of the communication tools used by the deaf. Information and discussions will be given to attendees on the types of educational programs and support services available to deaf persons, including services available at the Post Office.
Postal representatives, assisted by sign language interpreters, will provide information on how to conveniently use a variety of postal products and services. Attendees will receive instruction on using Automated Postal Units (APC), how to use postal online services offered through usps.com, and applying for passports. Registrations will also be accepted for Denver General Mail Facility tours.
The events will also provide information on postal career opportunities. The U.S. Postal Service is proud to be one of the nation's largest employers of people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. The Postal Service has approximately 4,000 deaf employees nationwide, including 95 in Colorado. Denver has the nation's highest population of deaf and hard-of-hearing postal employees with 65.
Saundra Calderone, U.S. Postal Service Deaf Liaison, says, "This is a great opportunity to educate the deaf and hard of hearing community on what the United States Postal Service has to offer. This is the first postal event of its kind. We are pleased to reach out to the deaf community. Our hope is that Denver will lead similar postal informational events for the deaf around the country."
