 Bott, I was reading about your interest in very old breeds and one of those that are fascinating to me is the Xolo About Xolos. Some have hair and some don't. I've only once or twice seen them at shows. Have you ever met one?

I have never seen one in person, but I have read a lot about them.

One thing that would bother me is that they are prone to skin cancers and I think they need to have their skin oiled.

oh,yeah - you're right about the skin cancer, I do recall reading that with Chinese Crested Hairless you have to put lotions and oils on them, be careful of them in Summer, and so too I guess for the Xolo.
Cancer is such a problem in purebred dogs in general....

A couple other ancient breeds that intrigue me are the Pharoah and Ibizan Hounds. Here's a link to what I think are some neat pic.'s of them- http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF...&gfns=1&q=Ibizian+and+Pharoah+hounds+pictures

The dogs I like the most are the non shedding breeds. Aside from Poodles, they have very silky hair very much like people.

Many of the old Chinese dogs really appeal to me. (I guess counting Tibet as a Chinese territory, even though it wasn't when the dogs were developed.)

Oh I see....my very first neighbor dog that I spent a lotta time with as a kid was a Black Mini Poodle named Toby. I was a shy and physically awkward little kid, cried easily and didn't do things the way a lot of other kids did, do i spent a lot of time with dogs.

My folks were particularly friendly with one set of neighbors composed of my mom's friend and her husband and the elderly mother <she lived with them> of my mom's friend. The friend of my mom's had been WW2 bride who married the soldier from States she met during wartime; her mother had been a resister of the Nazi's in Germany and had been tortured.

I would go over to their house and listen to stories in German and English about the elderly survivor's experiences. I didn't understand a lot of what she said but I enjoyed spending time with her. She would show me pictures from that time, and she made me birthday gifts. I called her "Grandma"
So a couple of consecutive Summers these folks had some friends from Texas come up and stay with them and the Texas friends brought their little dog.
This little dog was Toby and he had traveled extensively with them, including overseas - they showed us pictures. I remember they had a big white car with Longhorn cattle horns in the front bumper/plate area.
I would sit for hours outside in my parent's backyard with Toby on my lap. Sometimes me and one of the Texas people would walk to the mall a few blocks away, with Toby in a backpack carried by one of the adults. We went into the mall with him. I played with Toby and taught him tricks and took him for walks-

Boston Terriers are another favorite breed, and what my parents always kept in my childhood.

They are also a hypoallergenic breed, with hairs that are more like human than dog fur.
Of course they are a very young breed originating in the States.

They unfortunately, are prone to gum tumors, cancers , and kidney failure.

I am thinking that may be my old age dog of choice since it is low maintainence and doesn't need frequent trips to the groomer.

one of the people in the group of Rottie people associated with our breeder - one of those folks has Bostons too. She has 5 or 6 Rotties; one is a rescue...and also now two young male Bostons, both through rescue. Just adopted the younger male. She LOVES Bostons. They live in a very rural area.

:aw::hmm: didn't know about the kidney failure specifically in that breed.

do you like Pugs?

I do. They are closely related to Pekingese. I had a black pug when my kids were little. He was a rescue and sadly, one of the stupidest dogs i have ever seen. The only one who really thought he was wonderful was our pitbull / german shephard. She liked to grab his head in her mouth until he lost his temper and gave chase around the yard.

:) I like Pugs, too. We've had a couple in the shelter and they both went home. And many in training classes. They seem like sturdy little dogs.

I bet that was a sight - your GSD/Pit mix with the little Pug!

I saw two hairless dogs in a car one day and it was really cold that day. It was only in the 30's , the poor dogs had to had been cold. At least the owner(s) could had brought some jackets for their bald dogs if they plan on leaving them in a the car while grocery shopping. I would not want a bald dog! I like my dogs to have fur and not look like an over grown rat.

:giggle:whatdidyousay
yeah, I do think that hairless dogs pretty much NEED to have coats in the Winter, even if it's fairly mild weather.

I bet they can't be out in the sun too long as they could get a sunburn. I know of people that have Samoyed and the owner will have the dog dog fur shaved short for the summer. One Samoyed end up getting cancer when his fur was cut too short. It was really cold the day I saw the hairless dogs in the car.

that's true, whatdidyousay!, you have to put sunscreen on them-

Did you know the Pekingese is one of the oldest dogs, and is much closer to wolf genes than many other dogs that might have a wolf like look?

me?
I knew Pekes are an ancient breed but didn't know that about the wolf genes.
Do you think it's because of the breed's age?

A friend told there an article in Natural Geographic about dogs and it said that all dogs are linked to wolf. It the newest Natural Geographic magazine out. I have not read the article yet, I am waiting to get the magazine from the public
library. I was not able to find it a store to buy.

That was my assumption. I really just enjoy thinking of Joey being wolfy.

I had to LOL to this "I have never seen one in person," is the person you or the dog or both? I say the same thing ! I know Marty think he is a person sometime!
