American Chronicle | Bonheyo sees action at Gallaudet
MARYLAND SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF'S RYAN BONHEYO, who in 2009 was the first MSD student to earn a full athletic scholarship to a Division I school, has transferred from Towson University to Gallaudet University. He is playing running back for Gallaudet, a college for the deaf.
In an e-mail, Bonheyo said several factors figured into his difficult decision to transfer.
"First, there was no deaf community in Towson," he said. "Second, I wanted to go back to my original position, running back. There hasn't been a day where I regret the decision to go to Towson. I've learned a lot and enjoyed myself during my tenure at Towson."
According to a Towson official, the coaches were impressed with Bonheyo and wanted him to stay. The official said there was a possibility he could have started at linebacker and that it was Bonheyo's decision to leave
Bonheyo was a redshirt freshman at Towson last year.
He has seen a lot of action at Gallaudet, playing in three games with one start. He has rushed nine times for 16 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 39 yards. He has also intercepted one pass and returned five kickoffs for a 28.0 average.
Bonheyo is one of several former MSD players that have seen action for the Washington, D.C. school. Joshua Doudt is a senior linebacker who has 10 tackles, 2.5 for loss; junior defensive back Kevin Berrigan has played in three games on defense with one start and has three tackles; junior running back Scott Lehmann has two carried for minus-10 yards and has scored a two-point conversion; Clayton Grossinger is a sophomore linebacker who has five tackles, two for loss, and a forced fumble; senior Michel Daze is starting on the offensive line and freshman Corey Balzer is on the offensive line.
Steve Anderson has recovered from the serious knee injury that forced him to miss the final three games for the Army football team last year. The former Urbana and Damascus player and senior linebacker leads Army with 23 tackles, one for a loss. He has recovered one fumble. Last year, he was second on the team with 83 tackles despite missing the three games.
Dominic Clarke of Tuscarora has seen action in the defensive backfield and on special teams in three games with second-ranked Ohio State. He is listed third on the depth chart at cornerback behind All-American Chmba Chekwa. The redshirt freshman has three tackles, one on special teams. He has one pass breakup.
Jakarie Jackson of Tuscarora has played in two games and has 5.5 tackles as a starting safety at James Madison University. The sophomore had four tackles in JMU's upset win over Virginia Tech.
Quentin Ferguson of Frederick has 14 tackles in two games as a sophomore defensive back at Delaware State. He had 10 tackles in his team's opener against Southern. He has one tackle for loss. Thomas Threadgill of Frederick has one tackle in two games as a junior defensive lineman.
Nick Forbes of Thomas Johnson has played one game and has one tackle for the University of California. He is a freshman linebacker.
Urbana's Ryan Smith, who was vying for a starting spot as a senior fullback at Bucknell, suffered a ankle injury in the preseason and has not played. He ran for 283 yards as a junior last year.
Freshman Victor Walker of Thomas Johnson has four catches for 123 yards as a wide receiver at Bucknell University. He had three catches against Dartmouth. Walker, whose longest catch is for 58 yards, has started one game.
Senior Shannon Breen of Linganore is in his second year as a starting offensive tackle at West Virginia Wesleyan. He was a second team West Virginia Intercollegiate Athlete Conference pick last year. Freshman linebacker and special teams player Rick Conner of Linganore has also seen limited action for West Virginia on the special teams.
Linganore's Sean Sheehy is second in tackles with 19 for the Greensboro College football team. The sophomore defensive back is in his second year as a starter.
John Kelly of Tuscarora is starting at quarterback at St. Francis of Pennsylvania for the second straight season. The sophomore has completed 38 of 68 passes for 380 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions. He has three carries for 21 yards.
Corey Hunt of Thomas Johnson has 14 tackles and one fumble recovery as a sophomore safety on the Shippensburg football team.
Kevin Parrish of Urbana has two tackles as a senior defensive lineman at Johns Hopkins. He has half a tackle for loss.
Michael Johnson of Linganore has played in one game with four tackles as a freshman defensive back at Bryant University.
At Albright College, Deon Walker of Frederick has one tackle in two games. He is a freshman free safety.
Junior Jake Nichols of Thomas Johnson has made three of four field goal attempts, his longest being 34 yards, for the McDaniel College football team. He has kicked all four of his extra-point attempts. He has also punted 19 times for a 38.9 average.
Nichols was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the week for the week ending Sept. 11 after kicking two field goals, including the game-winner, in the Green Terrors win over Moravian.
Also at McDaniel, starting linebacker Tommy Prazenica saw his season come to an end when he suffered an ankle injury last Saturday against Catholic University. The senior from Frederick has eight tackles, two for a loss. Sophomore Billy Wessells of Middletown is starting at offensive guard for the Terrors. At Salisbury University, two area players are seeing a lot of action in the backfield. Junior Randal Smedley of St. John's has 296 yards on 39 carries. He has scored three touchdowns. Sophomore Ross Flanigan of Urbana has rushed four times for 39 yards and a touchdown and has caught one pass for 74 yards and a touchdown. Senior defensive back Quron Lewis of St. John's has one tackle in three games.
At Shepherd University, senior fullback Bobby Humphries of Thomas Johnson has six carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns. He has also caught two passes for 18 yards. He was named West Virginia Intercollegiate Offensive Player of the Week after gaining 90 yards and scoring twice in Shepherd's 35-27 win over Shippensburg. Also at Shepherd, junior linebacker Chris Patton of Urbana has seven tackles in two games; freshman defensive back Nick Marth of Linganore has a tackle in two games; senior Geoff Fry of Frederick is starting at left tackle and redshirt freshman Jordan Dixon of Walkersville has played in one game on the offensive line.
