Body found in Arthurs Pass in search for Greymouth man | NATIONAL News

Police searching for missing deaf Greymouth man Peter Bell have located a body in Arthur's Pass National Park.

Bell, 54, went missing from Greymouth on June 3 and despite an extensive inquiry and searches by police, he had not been found.

A member of the public found Bell's vehicle near Klondyke Corner last Sunday.

A search and rescue operation was launched and this afternoon police located a body in bush at Arthur's Pass.

The body has yet to be formally identified.

A scene examination has been completed and the body is being recovered and taken to Christchurch for a post mortem examination.

Police say the coroner has been advised and next of kin in Australia are being notified through Interpol.

Police say they cannot confirm that the body is that of Bell until a formal identification takes place.

It's not known how long the body had been there.

Police have confirmed that a body found in bush in Arthur's Pass yesterday is that of missing deaf Greymouth man Peter Bell.

The 54-year-old had been missing since he discharged himself from Greymouth Hospital on June 3.

Canterbury search and rescue coordinator Sergeant Ryan O'Rourke says the body was found yesterday afternoon in a bush area above the Waimakariri River.

He says it was discovered near Bell's vehicle on Klondyke Corner.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the matter would be reported to the coroner.
