Have anyone experiences of renting blu ray disc that made by Unversal Studios that have no bult in closed captions?
This is my 4th rents under Universal Studios that have no bult in CC!!! Arrrgg!!
List of movies that I rent in the past:
The Debt
Cowboys and Aliens
Hanna
The American

Those movie I rented have no frigg'in built in CC!!! I have no problem with other productions.

Universal Studios has always provided SDH when they started releasing movies on DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Rental discs? I remember Walt Disney did not provide either closed captioning or SDH on their rental discs for the movie, "Up".

Nope. DVD yes, but not Blu Ray. Those movie listed above have NO CC or SDH at all. Only DVS (Descriptive Video Service) and other language subtitles.
If you have Blu Ray player, try rent Cowboys and Aliens, see if you can find SDH.

I don't rent movies. So I can't really help you out on this one. Hope someone else here can answer your question.

since I rent Cowboys and Aliens and here's the pix below that only show this "Setup" then "Spoken Language".... Where's CC or SDH?

Here's the list of Film production companies that have SDH in Blu Ray:
DreamWorks SKG
20th Century Fox
Fox Searchlight Pictures
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
United Artists
Paramount Pictures
and so on, they all have SDH in Blu Ray... but only Universal Studios don't.

Did you scroll down on the language menu? Subtitles are usually at the bottom on Universal releases.

As you may already know, all BD movies don't have CC but most have English subtitles/SDH because BD players don't have a built-in CC decoder and HDMI (which can't carry "invisible" CC) is mainly used to watch 1080p video so that's why it's useless to make CC on BD movies. Therefore closed captions (CC) and subtitles which are like open captions are not the same.

However in your other comment you said no English subtitles/SDH on those rental movies, no shit? I suspect those rental movies are REPRODUCED without subtitles by Universal Studio for rental purpose only. I suggest you to try another rental movie store or Redbox to see if those same movies have subtitles or not. If they do, obviously those movies you already rented from the first place are reproduced ones.

I believe that Netflix also buy reproduced movies without subtitles which are cheaper to own copyrights because I remember that this company said that they are adding subtitles through its own captioning system. That's why Netflix doesn't offer new releases with subtitles, I guess.

Amazon.com shows that those movies for purchase have English subtitles or SDH or both. Hopefully someone else who already rented any of those BD movies will let us know.

Yes I'm aware of that. I'm specifically talking about SDH, I rent it from Blockbuster, but what I'm saying that most of the Universal Studios, even all of what I rented above have no SDH.

As for Banjo, yes, I scrolled everywhere and not one single info that show SDH.

So, I'm going to write a complant to both Studio and FCC and ADA.

I checked walmart store online. Those Cowboys and Alien Blu-ray does have SDH setting. but, I viewed your image don't see SDH in setting. wow...

Walmart.com: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Edition) (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet Copy) (Widescreen): Blu-ray

*checking my Iron Man 2 blu-ray*....Paramount does work with SDH... *checking my Green Zone blu-ray*... Unversal studio does work with SDH...

Yes, I rented "Green Zone" DVD (not Blue Ray) before I purchase Blu Ray player, DVD format have SDH. I will try to rent "Green Zone" in Blu Ray format again and see what happen.

Hmm, that doesn't make any sense. It sounds like it's a problem with the rental discs, not the retail discs.

Well, it's programmed with the list of menu, it's not like CC that have "decoded" where it can stripped out. If it's subtitle, it's programmed into the DVD and should listed in the menu. You know what I mean?

Yes, I know. This isn't the first time this has happened with rental discs. From what I know, some studios send out bare-bone discs for rental purposes. A bare-bone disc has nothing but the movie on it, no special features would be included.

Sometimes, as a result, they remove the SDH tracks. This is what happened with the "Up" release from Disney. They had to correct it.

In your original post, you mentioned CC three times so that's why I explained it in the first place. My apology.

Do you go to Blockbuster in person or get it by mail or order streaming movies from BB online?
In my area, there were two Blockbuster locations but they are closed for good. Chase Bank bought both of them.

Anyway, if you go to BB in person, why don't you try Redbox or other places? It might make a difference.

Yeah, It's my mistake as well of using the letter CC (I use both since some don't know what SDH stand for).

No, I use mail order DVD and yes, my nearest BB store was closed for good too. What I'm planning to do is to ask my step daughter to rent one of those movies (Netflix) above and see if it's the same thing happen.

That's if they have the retail discs instead of the rental discs. Maybe somebody here can confirm it.

Forget Netflix because most of the movies including new releases are not subtitled but you can check it out for youself. A deaf friend of mine from work has Netflix but he told me that most of them he watched with subtitles are foreign films because all others except older ones don't have subtitles.

I already saw all of the movies you mentioned above. However my son downloaded them online (free, shhh) and I burned them into DVDs (not in Blu-ray Disc format anyway). All of them were subtitled. I was planning to buy a BD burner for my PC but he said no, get a new video card with HDMI output instead and he can download BD movies online for me. So when I upgrade my video card and connect it to my HDTV via HDMI, I will let you know after I watch those movies again in BD format. Maybe I will order a new video card from Newegg.com today.
