WBIR.com | Knoxville, TN | Blount County Retired police dog missing; search for Nero underway

The search is on for a retired K-9 officer in Blount County. Nero, a 13-year-old Belgian Malinois wandered off on Saturday. Since then, sheriff's deputies have been scouring the Porter and Wildwood areas near Maryville. They don't plan to rest until they find him.

Normally, Nero lives with his former partner, Det. Sgt. James Trentham.

"He disappeared into the woodline, and I've not saw him since," he said.

Trentham and three other K-9 handlers spent the day Friday conducting grid searches for the eight-year veteran of the Blount County Sheriff's Office.

"We've covered about 15 acres. We're walking not hand in hand, but fairly close to one another and stepping together and making sure we don't miss anything," Trentham said.

Nero is one of the six original K-9s with the sheriff's office. He served with Trentham for four years. Trentham considers Nero a member of his family, as well as a member of the extended family of the sheriff's office.

"We had a working relationship for years together. He protected me and the people here in Blount County. I'm going to, and the other guys, we're going to what we can to have some closure on this because he deserves that," he said.

Nero is 80% deaf and 25% blind. Trentham hopes he has been taken in by a family who found him wandering.

"We just need some closure and knowing what happened to him. It's hard to give up when we don't have him or can't give him his final resting place. Until that happens, we'll be here looking for him," he said.

Trentham said Nero is very friendly and would not pose a threat. Anyone with information is asked to call Blount County's non-emergency line at (865) 983-3620.

I do hope Nero will be found and safe.
