Blood from a slain Brampton man was found on the jeans and jacket worn by the man accused of murdering him, jurors have heard.

Anthony Medwid, 20, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the March 23, 2007 stabbing death of Brian Wainman, 27.

But a forensic investigator had told jurors that the jeans and jacket identified as Medwid's clothing had impact blood stains from the deceased man.

Peel Const. Robert Hofstetter, a blood stains expert, said multiple stains that were caused by a punch, a kick or stabbing were found on the front near the waist of Medwid's jeans.

Wainman's blood was also soaked through the sleeve into the lining of Medwid's plaid winter jacket.

"The person wearing the jeans and jacket was standing close to – and facing – the blood-letting event," Hofstetter told a Brampton courtroom.

Medwid's blood was also found on the hallway wall outside of Wainman's apartment. Jurors were told the accused man likely cut his hand during the attack.

Jurors were told saturated blood was also found on Medwid's jeans – likely as a result of him kneeling on Wainman or kneeling in a pool of blood.

Wainman, who was deaf, was found on his back in his apartment, his sweatshirt bloodied by stab wounds inflicted during a booze-fuelled fight in his Church St. apartment.

Jurors have heard that a shoeprint was embedded into his left cheek indicating his face had been stomped on while he lay dying on the carpet in the living room of his third floor apartment.

He sustained stab wounds to his neck, face and chest, jurors heard.

Hofstetter said blood stains on the carpet near Wainman's mouth were experated when he was stepped on.

The zigzag print on his cheek matched the tread on shoes seized from Donald Corey Martin, 20, who has already pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Wainman's death.

Crown prosecutors Brian McGuire and Darilynn Allison allege Wainman was slain by a knife-wielding Medwid during an escalating argument.

Police didn't find Wainman's body until the following day.

Jurors have been show photos of blood stain patterns found on and around his body before and after he was removed from the crime scene. Also viewed were various shots of small blood stains on different walls in the sparsely furnished apartment at 167 Church St.

Four bloody footprints – similar to shoes seized from Medwid – that were found under and near Wainman's body after he was removed from his apartment could only have been made when he was standing during the deadly attack, Hofstetter said.

He said impact stains on a nearby wall indicated Wainman was struck with "significant force" but he couldn't determine if they were caused by a kick, punch or from being stabbed.

Cast-off blood drops on a wall came from an object being "swung up and down," Hofstetter said.

He said blood drops on the ceiling were "projected from the blood-letting event" and blood stains on the edge of the door to the apartment and the deadlock bolt indicated a person "with Wainman's wet blood on them touched the areas," he said.

Two women who were in the apartment earlier with another male friend – and who partied with Medwid, Martin and Wainman – testified they witnessed a fight between Wainman and Medwid and that Medwid threatened to "merk" (slang for murder) Wainman.

Jurors heard Wainman and Medwid argued earlier in the evening over somebody taking beer that didn't belong to them.

The trial continues today before Madame Justice Bonnie Wein.
