Blind, deaf schools merger protested | StatesmanJournal.com | Statesman Journal
About 100 people opposed to the combining of the Oregon School for the Blind and the Oregon School for the Deaf protested at the state Capitol on Saturday.
State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo has proposed to move the Oregon School for the Blind, now at 700 Church St. SE, onto the 52-acre campus of the Oregon School for the Deaf, 999 Locust St. NE, and sell the 8-acre site of the blind school. Supporters of each of the schools have objected, but Castillo's decision was backed last month by the state Board of Education.
The fates of the schools, an issue in the current legislative session, will be the subject of the next Salem City Club luncheon.
The luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Mission Mill Museum, 1313 Mill St. SE. Reservations are required by noon Tuesday; call (503) 589-2975 or e-mail salemcityclub@aol.com.
The cost is $12 for members and $14 for others; the program is free.
Pending legislation in the House Education Committee would earmark sale proceeds in a trust fund for school improvements; otherwise, the money would go to the state general fund.
Chairwoman Sara Gelser, D-Corvallis, favors moving the Oregon School for the Blind. Former Rep. Kevin Mannix, a Salem lawyer, will speak against the co-location plan
