Blind, deaf

People living with disabilities in Mpumalanga still face challenges accessing employment opportunities.

This was revealed at the recent Parliament for People Living with Disability held at the provincial legislature in Mbombela.

The purpose of the parliament was to make deliberations on employment-related challenges that face people living with disabilities and how they can be advanced both in the government and in the private sector.

“We still believe that blind and deaf people do not get equal opportunities like those who are otherwise physically disabled,” said Ernest Malinga from the South African National Council for the Blind. Malinga said while the government was trying to employ people with disabilities, more needed to be done.

He said the focus was especially given to those who had physical disabilities other than blindness and deafness. He said the government and private sector advertised jobs in newspapers that automatically sidelined those who were blind and/or deaf.

Addressing more than 300 delegates, legislature speaker William Lubisi said people with disabilities were still discriminated against when looking for jobs in various sectors.

“We are aware of the huge burden that people with disabilities carry in their daily lives. We need to intensify our voice against poverty in the lives of disabled people. Their plight should not be addressed in isolation,” said Lubisi.

He said the provincial government was working on ensuring that most offices were able to employ blind people.

Du Toit Nkambule, manager in the office of the disabled in the legislature, encouraged people living with disabilities to start cooperatives in order to avoid being on the government waiting list for employment.

“Government will not employ every disabled person in the province; there are those who have a business spirit. We also need to have their database where they could submit their CVs so that when various departments have vacant posts, we can place them,” said Nkambule.
