A blind and deaf woman has been left distressed after becoming the victim of a handbag snatch in North Bristol.

The 32-year-old woman had been dropped off by a taxi in Woodland Road, Redland at 11.30am on Thursday October 27. However she quickly realised she was not where she wanted to be and was lost. She wandered around the St Michael’s Hill area for about an hour.

A man, who she believed, was going to help her, approached her. She put down her rucksack and her long white and red stick - denoting she had sight and hearing problems – so that she could sign him.

But the man snatched her Winnie the Pooh handbag from her left shoulder – he made no threats and no force was used.

The distressed victim used her minicom text phone to call friends who drove around Redland to locate her. They found her outside St Michael’s Hospital at about 12.10pm.

The offender is described as a man who smelt of smoke. It is believed that he was taller than the victim who is 5ft 4ins.

Police at New Bridewell would like to hear from anyone who may have seen either the incident or who may have seen the woman, who was in the St Michaels area for some time before and after the incident occurred.

They can be contacted on 0845 4567000 or alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. You do not have to give your name and could qualify for a reward. Crimestoppers can also be contacted securely on-line via the force web site www.avonandsomerset.police.uk. OIC Emma Powell
