Blackall man strikes gold in deaf lottery | Local Faces | Toowoomba Chronicle

UNTIL earlier this month, Kevin Harlow reckoned he had never even won a chook raffle.

That changed on July 2 when his ticket was drawn out as the winner of the $350,000 first prize in the Deaf Lottery.

The 66 year-old retired mechanic from Blackall had purchased his ticket from the deaf lottery outlet at the customer service desk at Clifford Gardens.

A regular visitor to Toowoomba and entrant in the deaf lottery, Mr Harlow had built a friendship with Clifford Gardens Customer Service representative Pam Jukes who has been selling tickets for the deaf lottery for about 20 years.

“Pam told me she was going to sell me a winning ticket,” Mr Harlow said.

“She got it right.”

Mr Harlow said when he received the call he thought it was a hoax.

“I thought it was one of my nieces having a go at me.”

Having worked for 40 years in his trade, Mr Harlow said the money was very nice for him and his wife Sharyn to retire on.

The prize pack Mr Harlow chose was a new Toyota LandCruiser with the rest of the value of the prize made up in gold bullion.
