Bill would help deaf and blind students - Salt Lake Tribune
Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind will soon likely serve children with milder impairments.
Both legislative houses have passed HB296, a bill that would expand enrollment to students with functional hearing loss and low vision. It would also require the State Board of Education to draft rules allowing siblings of deaf and blind students to enroll, even those who are not sensory impaired.
Bill sponsor Rep. Kenneth Sumsion, R-American Fork, has said the goal of the bill is to speed delivery of early interventions like sign language and Braille. Now, students often must wait until they fall behind academically before they can enroll.
The Senate passed the bill 27-0 on Wednesday, and the House passed it 68-0 late last month.
