Big Boost for Deaf Sierra Leoneans: Sierra Leone News
two-man delegation from the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is expected in the shores of Sierra Leone today Tuesday 10th November 2009.
The WFD Regional Coordinator and Regional Trainer on Human Rights, Lucy Upah and Ms. Caroline Conlon respectively will jet in the country to meet with the executive and general membership of the Sierra Leone National Association for the Deaf.
The visit to Sierra Leone is in line with the federation’s deaf human rights and capacity building training project in western and central Africa.
It is a three years project focused on capacity building of western and central African deaf associations with an overriding aim of strengthening the said organizations and providing them with tools for more efficient lobbying and advocacy work in human rights of deaf people.
The project arranges two training sessions in each national association in the topics: capacity building and human rights. It also arranges regional seminars, which gathers representatives of each association to promote regional dialogue as well as to support regional networking and the establishment of permanent regional secretariat.
The Acting Coordinator of the Sierra Leone National Association for the Deaf, John Genda yesterday led a team of his members including Ramatu Sesay and Alhaji Lahai Vagahun, to brief the Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, D. Soccoh Kabia.
In the brief but precise meeting, the Minister said the visit of the WFD members was welcome news, whilst assuring that his Ministry is all set to welcome to visiting team.
Meanwhile, members of the Sierra Leone National Association for the Deaf are expected to converge today at the Lungi International Airport to welcome and receive their visitors.
