Beverly Hospital settles case on deaf patient care - BostonHerald.com

Federal authorities say Beverly Hospital has agreed to a three-year program to improve its services for hearing-impaired patients and patients’ family members.

The settlement announced Wednesday by U.S Attorney Carmen Ortiz comes after a Justice Department investigation found the hospital wasn’t meeting federal requirements to provide qualified sign language interpreters for one or more deaf patients.

Ortiz said the investigation also found the hospital was making "significant" good faith efforts to improve. The agreement calls for interpreter services for patients and patients’ hearing-impaired family members, better staff training and monitoring.

The hospital said Wednesday it has worked closely with federal authorities since it became aware of the concerns, and is continuing to work to improve services.
