Besides ignorance and just plain stupidity and meanness, why do you think hearing people treat deaf people so wrong? As a hearing man I am totally puzzled. Why do you think they are like that?

Note: There are hearing folks (an important point) who are totally cool with deaf people, like me. I'm talking about those other hearing people who give all hearing people a bad rap in Deaf culture. What's at the core of that shit?

No clue. However, I don't see the need to post a thread like this weekly.

Honestly, I think the majority of hearing people treat deaf people just fine. Uncertainty and ignorance on how to communicate with a deaf person is common and can lead to problems, but it is rare, at least in my experience, that a hearing person just outright mistreats a deaf person because they are deaf.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I do wonder at your need to stir up pathos on this issue time and time again. This must be at least the third thread you've started on the subject in the last couple months.

Oh, to be quite frank, I am simply curious my friend. No more. No bad intentions. I never (ever!) want to stir thing up.

But I know why you guys might think I am though. Is that Evolution thread I created not too long ago. Even in that thread, initially, I had no mal intent - believe or not. I appears that I had, but in all honesty I am not the type to make waves.

In regards to this thread I am just curious to know your angle. I am a harmless member. I am a good guy. Please do not think of me incorrectly. Thank you. You are all my friends. Believe it.

We get it: you like deaf people, and you share our pain. But you've been around here long enough to be able to see why tensions arise between hearing and deaf people. If you don't see why, then you're not paying attention.

Now I feel that I am being attacked.

Well, I'm not attacking you personally, but I am attacking your bringing up this issue time and again in different incarnations. The reason is because it does not serve a constructive purpose. You see, this question is a biased question to begin with. Not all hearies are bad people and mistreat deaf people, and not all Deaf people think that all hearies are bad people. So when you ask it, you're reinforcing a false conclusion that is bad for everyone involved.

The other problem about your question is that it is a very complicated question. It cannot be answered in absolute terms.

Who's to say why human beings behave the way we do? Why do we hate others based on their skin color, or their language, or their funny looking nose, or... That's just human nature. We are afraid of what is different or what we don't understand, and when we are afraid, we do mean things, but it's not because we are mean by nature. Good people do bad things.

:gpost:

I don't see why a thread of this sort needs to be started?

AquaBlue, I was hoping that you as a hearing person would know why as you might hear the reason(s) from other hearing people.

I don't know why things like that happened. I don't know why the laws that affected the deaf people in the past was set up like that in the first place.

If we know exactly what it was, we could change it for our benefits.

Extremely over broad generalization which is incapable of resolution as each person themselves are responsible for their own behaviour. What about all persons who "become late deafened and have Cochlear Implants"?

For some reason, I didn't realize that the op was hearing till this thread. In a way, I'm kind of wondering the same thing. That it's been few times that the op has started this type of thread and am wondering what's its purpose?

Anyway to answer the question, my thoughts are kind of along the lines of the above post. That there are many different overlaps as to why different people may not get along with different people at different times for various reasons as so forth. It isn't necessarily in just a simple black and white, "hearing vs deaf or vice versa" sense, there are also many gray areas.

I am deaf but i make fun of non-deaf people all the time. :) Sometimes i'll just start cracking up at someone who is going on and on with a story and cant figure out how to wrap it up. Like he's trapped in a forrest of spoken language and can't find the words to get him out.

If someone makes fun of me for being deaf then i'll call them idiot, or stupid, or (insert your curse word here). Yes this usually ends up in fist fights but the next time i see that person they never make fun of my deafness again.

Heck, i'm also only 36 years old 5 feet tall male with bad knees and a skin problem, but i never lose a fight, but that doesn't mean i win them either. :) But things have always changed for the better when stickign up for yourself.

Maybe people just ike to make fun of each other to show the illusion of superiority. I don't think its specific and reserved only to deafness.

Yeah someone could argue "violence isn't necessary" becaues we're humans and should be able to work out our differences intelligently. The problem though is that not always both parties in an argument are intelligent.
