News - Local News: Find out what's happening in and around SG19 (SG19)
Staff at Bedford College believes that a fantastic learning environment should be available to everyone and so, for deaf students, a wide range of services are designed to allow them to take part in every aspect of College life.
Deaf Support Services is a specialist team that works tirelessly to offer deaf students mentoring and support in areas where extra guidance may be needed, such as the driving theory test.
Funded by the Bedford Charity, Bedford College is offering a course open to all deaf people in the community, as well as students, designed to support deaf learners in understanding the terminology of the driving theory test. The course will run over 10 weeks, 3 times a year, and a DVD will be produced to be made available free of charge to the wider deaf community.
In October Marcus Fuccillo joined the Deaf Services team at Bedford College as tutor for the course, unravelling the mysteries of the driving theory test. Deaf students use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate and that doesn't always fit with the words of the theory test and so extra guidance is needed.
As an Educational Communicator and deaf himself, Marcus has the knowledge, skills and experience to pass on to students and to bridge the communication gap between BSL and the written word.
Katrina O'Brien, Assistant Director - Foundation and Additional Support, explained:
"Students studying the full range of courses available at Bedford College are able to access Deaf Support Services where support workers and a mentor are on hand to offer them support and guidance on an individual basis.
Deaf Support Services have their own space in College - a social hub offering our students an opportunity to meet in a social setting, access support from our experienced team and to join additional courses such as this to help with their learning experience.
We are delighted to be working with Marcus Fuccillo and the Bedford Charity on a project that offers our students and the wider deaf community this course on the driving theory test. It is an extension of the dedicated work that goes on every day at the College to support our talented students."
Scott Wooding, a first year accountancy student, has joined Deaf Services as a mentor to other students and says:
"If students are feeling low or need to build confidence, I am here to offer advice or point them in the right direction for more support. I am deaf and know exactly what others may be going through. As a student it is good to be able to contact another student to sort out any problems and find out about courses such as this, which will be of great value to us all."
Deaf Services at Bedford College is a growing area with an increase each year in the number of students accessing support.
Suzie Sampson, Deaf Support Services Co-ordinator, explains:
"It is incredible how word soon goes round that good things are happening at Bedford College and it is the place to be to study a wide range of courses and get the support you need as a deaf student.
"Many of our students attend Deaf Clubs where they may learn of the opportunities at Bedford College and our Facebook page has been a fantastic way of getting messages across, from College to students and from students to students. Our students are a pleasure to work with and we are delighted to be able to offer them this course."
