Looks like non-verbal way of communication is acquired faster and helps to teach reading.

At 12 months it is not specified how many real words are signed, though.
At 18, the signing baby knows about 10-20 more words than speaking baby
and up to 3 phrases more.

At 24, the differences are minimal.

At 3-5 y, both know the same number of words, signing tot knows all the alphabet, can read a bit by self.

It has long been known that signed language is acquired faster for children because their motor skills used for signing develop much faster than the skills that allow them to speak.
