Baby grandson of Jack Nicklaus found dead in a hot tub

30 minutes ago Entertainment - AFP

MIAMI (AFP) - A 17-month-old grandson of golf legend Jack Nicklaus reportedly died after he was found dead in a hot tub at his family's Florida home.

According to the Miami Herald, doctors spent more than an hour trying to save Jake Walter Nicklaus after his nanny found him in the hot tub at the North Palm Beach home.

The child was eventually pronounced dead.

"At this point there is no indication of foul play," said Paul Miller, a spokesman for the local Sheriff's office.

"Unfortunately, the baby made his way into the jacuzzi," he said.

Police were interviewing the nanny who has worked since November for Steve Nicklaus and his wife Barbara.

Steve Nicklaus, 41, is a prominent golf course designer and the son of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, 65.

The infant was the second youngest of Jack Nicklaus' 18 grandchildren.

I wonder has the detectives Harrased Jack Nicklaus a bit? Oh thats right they wont rough him up cause hes wealthy. But boy they rough that british girl up for shaking a baby. You know why? Cause she aint wealthy.

Cops will call it an accident... and closed the case, just like that?
No investigation?

Huh? Jack Nicklaus was not involved in it. It is his SON and the nanny he hired.

It shame.. Should have cover and lock it after get out the tub. Always lock the door that this boy can't open the door.

Oh boy! My mom have a pool and we always lock the gate and he can't get in the pool without parent or famiy supervises.

Huh? This has nothing to do with Nicklaus' celebrity status. It has to do with an accidental drowning of a baby. But, a word about the cops... Sounds like they investigated properly, and it was ruled accidental. Therefore, no one is at fault here.

Sounds to me like a case of "Shit happens". It's tragic, but children find trouble to get into. And, yes, the nana should have paid closer attention to the whereabouts of the child, but I'm sure she realizes this. The worst that could have happened is, if you had over zealous cops trying to charge the nanny when no actual crime took place.

Like I said, shit happens. This was tragic, but it happens.

Yeah SHIT HAPPENS But That Brit Nanny should never been arrested by the boston police for shaken a baby to death. She was trying to make him stop crying. It was an accident BUT THE PIGS STILL ARRESTED HER. Why its simple shes not a millionare or a billionare. Just like William Kennedy Smith didnt go to prison for rape on the kennedy compound. Cause William Kennedy Smith is a nephew of ted kennedy. Just like another member of the kennedys was let go because he raped and murder a 14 year old girl back in 1975. So the people of massachusetts are still retarded by not voting ted kennedy out of office. I think whatever goes on with the politicans family he should be held accountable for it.

Steve, try to understand. This was an accident, and had nothing to do with what you're saying here. Give it a rest, okay? Or, at least, do research so you can actually speak intelligently when you argue your points. You really don't make any sense.

I do make sence. I forgot the girls name ok? She shook that baby to death IT WAS AN ACCIODENT BUT PIGS STILL ARRESTED HER !!! So i think the detectives should investigate how the baby was left to drown and who took the baby to the tub and left him. Whoever was the last person get your cuffs out cuff him or her and read their rights.Accident or not a crime is a crime.

A 17 months baby can walk and climb into the hot tub?

How can a 17 months baby walk that far?

They did that, Steve, and they determined there was no crime!

When 911 was called, not only was an ambulance dispatched, but so were the police. When the police arrive, they are required to do an investigation. I am postive they talked to the Nanny. They probably also talked to the baby's parents. They probably saw where the pool was. And, looked at other details as well. Once they found out all they could, they determined the nanny wasn't at fault. Accept it, Steve. This was an accident!

As for Louise Woodward, I don't believe she was at fault for that child's death, either. I believe that the parents caused their own child's death; then blamed the nanny. Either way, trying to compare the two is like comparing apples to oranges. Two different cases with different circumstances. You can't compare them.

Oh dear, it's really sad. It's nightmare for his family.

I guess I'll have to take an opposing stance on this. Adults are responsible for keeping children safe. Someone was responsible for the child's safety when he found his way into the hot tub.

I sell, install and service pools and hottubs. I know they are dangerous to small children. I warn parents of this. My hot tubs come with childproof covers. The pools have fences around them. Alarms are available to detect a child falling in a pool. They don't cost much more than a smoke alarm. The children can wear a "water turtle" bracelet that sets off an alarm if it gets submerged.

Seventeen months is the age of my granddaughter. I am well familiar with the ability of a child that age to get into mischief if left unattended. You cannot leave them alone even in a room containing nothing but toys! They are facinated by water.

IMHO, the nanny was a professional hired to be a surrogate parent in the absence of the parents. She was responsible for the child's safety. She neglected her professional duty and the result was a dead child. Should she be prosecuted for the death? That I don't know. I did not do the investigation, and I am not the parent. Parents and babysitters have been charged and convicted numerous times in similar circumstances. Similar in what has been released to the media anyway. To me, leaving a child that age unattended with access to a hot tub, or even a full bathtub, is not much different than leaving a loaded gun where they can get to it, or leaving a child unattended in a running vehicle.

It is indeed a sad situation for everyone involved. It hits me personally because I see parents of toddlers with pools and hottubs all the time and I spend a lot of time and energy trying to educate them on child safety. To me, it was no more of an accident than a child killed in a wreck because it was not in a carseat, but standing up in the seat. So easy to prevent with a little common sense.

Shaking a baby to death is no accident. It would be like somebody 'accidentally' hitting you over the head 20 times with a bat and then saying 'I didn't mean to kill him'.

This is a tragic story. I guess I'm sensitive when it comes to children so even though it was an accident, IMO something should be done. I remember how angry I was when a father left his infant in a hot van in Virginia a few years ago. It was an accident and he didn't mean to do it, but was negligent. I kind of feel the same way about parents who do not secure items in their house to prevent accidental death (such as swimming pools, hot tubs, firearms, chemicals normally under the sink).
