The case of a crushed 1-pound puppy has taken some complicated turns.

Three people have been charged with child abuse, and police have found that the puppy was accidentally killed by a 14-year-old developmentally disabled teen.

The case of the dead Pekingese mix yielded a police investigation that resulted in child abuse charges against 19-year-old Desirae McGee and her parents, Michael McGee, 38, and Christine McGee, 39.

"The child abuse charges are results of the conditions of the home when the search warrant was executed Sunday," Edgewater, Colo., police spokesman Mike Marchese told Denver's ABC affiliate KMGH Channel 7.

Police removed eight animals from the home, including cats, dogs, kittens and puppies. They are being housed at a shelter in Edgewater.

Desirae McGee first said that she rescued the puppy from two teens who were tossing what she thought was a football. She said when she got closer, she realized it was an animal. McGee said that she grabbed the Pekingese from them and that the boys ran away. She took the puppy to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, where efforts to save it failed. Veterinarians said the puppy had internal injuries and breathing problems.

Police executed a search warrant at McGee's home Sunday. They said they found evidence that led them to believe that the puppy actually belonged to McGee.

Police then determined her 14-year-old brother had accidentally stepped on the puppy.

Conditions in the home led police to remove the animals.

"All of the animals are in good health. It's our goal to make certain they are well taken care of while Edgewater police investigate and find out the facts of the case," said Angela Davis, the manager of the shelter.

"We have placed the puppies and their mother in foster care to be certain they stay healthy and in a stress-free environment. The future of these animals depends on the outcome of the case."

:tears: It broke my heart when I read that! Ugh, the boys deserve worse trouble for killed that puppy! :tears:

Woman Who Reported Puppy Abuse Now Investigated

EDGEWATER, Colo. The woman who reported a case of animal abuse became the target of the investigation Sunday. The woman had said she saw two boys tossing a newborn puppy like a football. Police said they believe the woman was lying.

The puppy died over the weekend. Investigators are considering charges against the woman.

Police said they received several tips that the report by Desirae McGee's story was not credible. Investigators plan to interview the veterinarian who treated the puppy on Monday.

McGee, 19, took the 3-week-old puppy into the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital on Friday night. A veterinarian examined the dog and said its internal injuries were severe.

Police said Sunday that a search of McGee's home turned up several other puppies which looked just like the one that she took to the animal hospital. All those dogs have been taken to an animal shelter.

A young woman who answered the door at McGee's house Sunday night didn't want to be interviewed on camera. She said "it was just an accident" and said she didn't know exactly what happened.

Pup's death sparks three arrests

EDGEWATER - Police have arrested a 19-year-old woman and her parents on child abuse charges in an investigation that began when the teenager claimed to have rescued a 3-week-old puppy from two boys who were abusing it.
Desirae McGee and her parents, Michael McGee, 38, and Christine McGee, 39, were arrested late Monday, according to Edgewater police spokesman Mike Marchese.

Desirae McGee faces one count of child abuse and one count of false reporting. Her parents are facing two counts of child abuse. All of the charges are misdemeanors, he said.

"The child abuse charges are results of the conditions of the home when the search warrant was executed Sunday," Marchese said.

The three were issued summonses and were not taken into custody.

Marchese said Desirae and her 3-month old baby have voluntarily left the home in the 2000 block of Otis Street. The McGees' 14-year- old son and 15-year-old daughter were "placed out of the home voluntarily," Marchese said, and are staying with friends or relatives.

He said Michael and Christine McGee have been informed about health and sanitary problems inside the home. Social Services will do a home visit and inspection before the McGees' younger son and daughter are allowed to return home, Marchese said.

Desirae McGee initially was believed to have been a hero for saving the puppy from two teenage boys who she said were tossing the puppy back and forth on Friday.

The puppy was taken to the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital with internal injuries and breathing problems. It died about 5 a.m. Saturday.

Marchese said the puppy's death appears to have been caused by the "14-year-old developmentally disabled brother of Desirae McGee accidentally stepping on the animal."

Investigators began to consider Desirae McGee a "person of interest" over the weekend when inconsistencies began popping up in her story, Edgewater Police Chief Dan Keough said.

The dead puppy is being sent to Colorado State University, where veterinarians will try to determine the exact cause of death. Marchese said if those findings indicate the puppy's fatal injuries were not accidental, police could pursue animal cruelty charges.

The puppy died of injuries consistent with "blunt-force trauma," said veterinarian Peter Erling, who treated the puppy.

Five dogs, including three puppies believed to be the dead pup's litter mates, and three kittens were removed Sunday from the McGees' home and taken to the Table Mountain Animal Center.

All eight animals appear to be healthy, said Ben Drotar, the shelter's marketing and development director. "The future of these animals depends on the outcome of the case," Drotar said, adding that no decision on whether to put them up for adoption will be made until the case is completed.

Keough said he is not aware of any previous animal control calls to the McGee residence.

In the quiet neighborhood where Desirae McGee lives, neighbors were shocked at learning she was under investigation.

"That's surprising," said Michelle Foster, who has known the McGee family for about 12 years. "I don't know what's going on . . . but we're shocked."

She said the McGees are friendly people who often looked after stray animals. "She always took strays," she said of the teenager's mother, Christine McGee.

That's really sad and quite literally sickening to the stomach to know--

Although, the investigation is on-going and surely, more will come out of it as more evidence and facts do come up...to a point that there's some cover-up behind the puppy's death.

Yeah, since the woman did lied to the police saying she saw two boys throwing the puppy back and fourth, and when it lead back to the same woman who happen to be the owner of that puppy, it makes me sick how could she lied, even if it may be an accident, but since the veterinarians will try to determine the exact cause of death and I'll just wait and see if this woman is telling the truth this time....It doesn't make any sense, I mean accidents do happen but why lie about it in the first place? something not right and she may be lying again who knows :dunno:....

Poor puppy this is sad :( ....

Tsk tsk on that woman for lying to cover up the story. It is really sad to see what happened to this poor cute puppy. Keep us updated if you hear any new follow ups to this story, ^Angel^

Vet cites injuries from 'being thrown' in pup's death

By Ivan Moreno, Rocky Mountain News March 2, 2006

A 3-week-old Pekingese puppy that died Saturday had fluid build- up around the lungs, a choking injury "consistent with being thrown in the air and caught," a veterinarian said in a court affidavit.
That matches what 19-year-old Desirae McGee told Edgewater police, but she still faces a charge of false reporting.

Court documents show that McGee told police she rescued the puppy from two teenagers who she said were tossing it around Friday. She also claimed the puppy wasn't hers.

But neighbors told police the puppy belonged to McGee, and police obtained a warrant to search the home of her parents in the 2000 block of Otis Street, according to a Jefferson County Court affidavit filed Sunday.

Police have seized three puppies, two dogs and three cats from the home.

McGee and her 3-month-old baby, as well as her younger brother and sister, voluntarily left their parents' home after police found it to be unsanitary, spokesman Mike Marchese said Monday.

McGee faces one count of child abuse; her parents, Christine, 39, and Michael, 38, face two counts of child abuse. Police issued them summonses but did not take them into custody.

Marchese said police will pursue animal cruelty charges if veterinarians at Colorado State University determine the puppy's death wasn't accidental.
