Autism Society - National Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month.
Wear blue to show your support, and click on the link above to find out what you can do.

At the least, wear blue!!

On a side note, why don't we have a Deaf Awareness month?

I don't know how I didn't know about that. Thanks ;-)

Wearing blue, and doing other activities too.

I do not know if that happens in England. I work with 9 teenagers with autism, they are challenging but they are great young people.

Everyone is -aware- of autism in that vague lets-all-raise-money-and-wear-ribbons-and-pretend-it-does-something sense.

How about spreading "awareness" that many "charity" organizations in the us, Autism Speaks top among them, seek to fund eugenic research to develop a prenatal test for autism and to allow autism to be simply eliminated from the gene pool?

How about spreading "awareness" that organizations that spread these "awareness months" the loudest are (autism speaks) also the organization that published a video with the mother of an autistic nine year old talking, while her daughter was in the room, about how she wanted to murder her because she was autistic? How about "awareness" for the fact that autistics still die because of the "treatments" and "therapies" quacks, including medical doctors, sell for autism?

How about "awareness" of the countless children and adults murdered because they were autistic, usually with no or minimal criminal punishment for their murderer?

How about "awareness" that pretty much every major autism organization in the US budgets basically nothing for services for autistics, especially autistic adults: most of their money goes to "awareness", eugenic or dehumanizing "research", administrative expenses (paying themselves 600k a year salaries), and "family" services, aka services which teach parents that their children are a burden to be dealt with and which make no effort to serve autistic adults?

How about "awareness" that organizations made of primarily parents of autistics and individuals who are parents of autistics that spread misinformation and fear about vaccination have killed hundreds, if not thousands of people already? How about "awareness" that if vaccine fear-mongering continues, the goals we had of eradicating many diseases just years from now will slip from between our fingers as more and more people die from those diseases?

"awareness" is such a ridiculous concept. Almost everyone is -aware- that autism exists in the world. But not nearly enough people are -aware- of concepts like, what autism really means and all the presentations that autism can have, or neurodiversity, or of the tortures and inhumane treatment inflicted by those seeking to "cure" autistics, or of the whole and valid life autistics lead.

I don't agree that "awareness is... A ridiculous concept." without awareness people would continue to think that the ability to speak is equivalent to ones level of intelligence. Without awareness, people would think that all individuals with autism are incapable of accomplishing anything in their lives. Without awareness, people would think those who are blind cannot navigate through life independently.

I posted this as something positive, for individuals to show their support for others if they choose to. I don't agree with the abuse, but that doesn't mean that I should not wear blue (for example) to show that I am standing with those individuals and families who are facing challenges.

Awareness is shedding light on both the good and the bad. So, I don't really know what else to say except for that I'm sorry you have such negative feelings about bringing awareness to challenges others are facing.

That's the thing! You never brought "awareness and understanding" to anyone about anything at all about autism. You told people to click on a link and "wear blue". Awareness months aren't about spreading real information, and they aren't about -understanding- the condition, they're about gathering donations from a public who will pat themselves on the back for being vaguely "aware".

Well in that case, I apologize it was first thing in the morning and I didn't have time to write an in depth article on autism. I was attempting to encourage people to do their research and find out more, if they weren't already "aware." Next time I post something like this I'll be sure to include my thesis so that people can become more educated and "aware" of the topic.
