VIENNA: The bodies of four babies have been found at a house in Austria- two wrapped in plastic bags in freezer and two entombed in buckets of concrete-police said yesterday.
Police in the southeastern city of Graz said the children had died around the time they were born and the cause of their deaths was unclear.
A 38-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of killing them and had said she did not know what happened, police added.
A 38-year-old man, identified as the woman's boyfriend, was also arrested on suspicion of murder, police said.
"She says she was in such a state that she simply doesn't know what she did," the head of Graz criminal police, Anton Lehr, said, adding that she said she gave birth to the children in her bathtub and could not remember what happened next.
"We assume that these are her children but we need it in black and white with DNA etc," Lehr said.
Television footage showed uniformed police wearing gloves searching a woodstack near the house and around the garden, and officers said their search for more bodies would continue.
"We are still in the middle of our search and naturally cannot rule out that we will find another or several more (bodies)," chief police investigator Werner Jud told Austrian state radio.
Graz's Kleine Zeitung newspaper said someone who lived in the house, which was divided into flats, discovered one of the bodies in a plastic bag inside a shared freezer while looking for ice cream on Monday. He then alerted the police, it said.
Police found antoher baby in the freezer and a third encased in concreted inside a paint bucket in the house. The fourth was in a bucket of concrete in a shred near the house, police said.
Lehr said the woman told police the children were born one to one and a half years apart and that the most recently born died roughly two years ago.
"Her statement is that the first child (that was found) died two years ago, but we don't have any forensic results," Lehr said, adding that she said "the first one found was the last born".
Lehr said the boyfriend was married and had three children but has been living with this woman for several years.
The woman said her boyfriend had not noticed that she was pregnant, he added.
Neighbours described the couple as "hard-working" and said the woman was a "good soul", state broadcaster ORF reported.

I read this article in my hometown newspaper, I was shocked and dismayed that something like this could happen. Those poor babies, and there she is still living in that house. Knowing not knowing what happened just doesn't make any sense. These babies never asked to be born. The baby entombed in the cement, that bother me more, I just couldn't get that out of my mind.
