ATTN Canadians: News Items from Canadian Association of the Deaf abotu VRS

About time that we have video relay services for Deaf Canadians.

Hubby and I use VIABLE and it's great!

Congrats! at least the process is started for real! :D

Why's it gonna take so long, Banjo?

Well... first of all, they still have to figure out the funding for VRS and where to get it from. After that, the telecoms will have to set up call centres where they'll be operating the VRS at. Of course, there's also the issue of finding enough interpreters to hire while it's already difficult enough to book an interpreter for a doctor's appointment. You often have to book one 2 weeks in advance, so having VRS providers setting up call centres may cause more problems.

I want a VRS... but at the same time, I am also concerned on how it will affect the shortage of interpreters.

Thanks, Banjo; that, indeed, is a tall order.

Banjo,
CAD said:
The CRTC will now prepare its decisions and it will probably announce them in two-to-four months. If it decides to call another proceeding, then Canada probably won’t get VRS until the middle of 2010. If it agrees with CAD that no new proceeding is needed, then we might get VRS by the end of 2009.

I hope that they would be soon. If shortage of interpreters in Canada, CRTC should agree SorensonVRS, Purple, or other VRS to cooperative. I don't like that they are delay to be ready too long.

If it's first time to have VRS. It's more like, they will have limited service until they have enough fund and able to get more interpreter on hours of labor.

Yes, Banjo say, it will take a while to become standard Relay service to be use.

Wow! Be prepared for the very long and painful birth of VRS industry in Canada!
