I've never blogged, or chatted on any sites before... I was told today that I have to move my deaf grandmother into longterm care and I only have until Monday. What I couldn't believe is that there is only one private facility in the state for the deaf.... Adult protection services is pushing me to put her somewhere, where no one signs! How is this even possible? I'm also being told that medicare/medicaid won't cover translation service, or even an aid that can sign. I honestly want to scream. How can it be that we are in 2012, and the deaf community still has to struggle? Please if anyone knows of an assisted living facility in Denver with deaf seniors that sign, let me know....I am so heart broken for her.

I'm not in Texas, but really sorry and you've expressed ur genuine concern for your Mamma...and I admire that.....

Believe rolling7 lives in Texas...maybe he could help ya? Or some other member who lives in Texas...

As for my city, just recently found out of a very nice place (from my interpretor)...as she had to put her own deaf Mother into a home....for that place, residents are allowed to have their own furniture and home decor...and is in a very nice location....and they are deaf friendly!...As I know of a few other elderly deafies that went to a home elsewhere that was just terrible!....

It's a heart-breaking decision on your part, I'm sure...but really hope some members from Texas will be a big help to you!...Good Luck.

I found this link :
Resource Guide to Deaf Services

Can you mother stay with you until you find a place? I would be more than heart broken , I would mad as HELL! Do you have a Council On Aging Center you can call?

I've no idea why there is a mention of Texas as I'm reading Denver.
However, yes, there is an assist living for the deaf located in San Marcos, Texas. I forget the name but think it is Sign of Hope.

I think you should call or visit at the Independent Living Coordinator for the Deaf/hard of hearing who they I believe will help you out the situation:

rental and utility assistance, etc.
